Muslim Madness in the U.S. Military

Kansas City Star and Fort Hood

With reference to the Star's not posting any editorial comment about the Fort Hood shooting, I salute them for not doing so--and only wish that they had acted similarly when Dr. Tiller was killed. I sent some very toughly worded emails to the Star columnists who "rushed into print" after the Tiller killing--that is the sort of journalistic irresponsiblity that, in my native South, got countless innocent black men lynched a hundred years ago. Let us hope that the Star continues the responsible policy they have taken on the Fort Hood killings: This time, allow the judicial porcess of investigation and adjudication to work rather than trying to stir up the 21st century versions of lynch mobs. Sincerely, Ernest Evans

So Ernest, what are you saying...

...that maybe the guy with the guns who shot the unarmed soldiers and was in turn shot by a cop is maybe innocent? Are you thinking a lynch mob is going to storm Fort Hood, spring him out of the hospital and hoist him up a tree limb?

Or mabe you are applauding the Star for letting this story die on the vine before they are confronted with the need of giving his name and the fact that he evidently acted out of religious convictions.

Fort Hood Shooting

Dear Mr. Ray: No, what I am saying is that we don't need to "dump fuel on the fire" in these sorts of tense situations by inflamatory media coverage--let us remember that a number of totally innocent Middle Eastern people were murdered in the US the aftermath of 9/11; despite the very sincere efforts of President Bush to preserve calm and prevent such violence--I did not vote for Bush either time, but one of the finest acts of his presidency was to visit a mosque a few days after 9/11 and to arrange for an Iman to speak at the national memorial service for 9/11. (I am Catholic, by the way--I guess interviewing dozens of Holocaust survivors over the years makes me cautiously about stirring up hatred of any religion.) The Star has done what is right in this case: Not engaged in a lot of inflamatory coverage that could encourage further acts of violence against the innocent. Now, a number of innocent people have been killed at Fort Hood and I don't blame people for being angry and upset--but we must not take actions that will make a bad situation worse. Sincerely and Respectfully, Ernest Evans

I get it Ernest...

...until the Star can figure out a way to report on this and gloss over details like name and motive, then they should remain quiet. Got it, would hate to present the public with facts, Lord knows the masses don't know how to conduct themselves much less do their own thinking.

I've got a news flash for you Ernest, the idiots that commited those crimes after 9/11 are rare. You seem to think the general public is made up of rubes and simpletons who are waiting for a spark to be lit.

Did your time interviewing Holocaust suvivors teach you anything recognizing when true hatred is being cast your direction? Do you willingly blind yourself simply because an evil hides behind the curtain of "religion"?

I am by no means calling for the deportation or incarceration of any group or of the outlawing of any "religion". I am saying however that it is disingenuous to pretend to overlook a common denomonator to simply appear morally superior.
