Here is how things went down from B5:

The standing authority gave them clearance to engage the pirates if the life of the captain was in imminent danger. The on scene commander deemed this to be true and gave the order to fire. All three bad guys were taken out and then a rigid inflatable boat went to the lifeboat to retrieve Phillips. Iti is unknown at this point whether the shooters were SEALs or Marine Scout Snipers as both would have been available. This was not a rescue attempt ordered by National Command Authority i.e. the President. It was a reaction by the on scene commander under standard authority to safeguard the life of a hostage."

It's about d*mn time! Thanks for the intel, Nee. Of course, my hope is that it turns out to be Marine Snipers but I'm prejudiced and old enough to have a hard time getting my head around sailors who can shoot.

My guess is that the MSM will have Obama taking the shots instead of receiving treatment for the anal bruising he actually got.

You noticed the WH staff,led by Rahm-bo,rushed right out after the successful operation to make DAMN SURE the media got it THEIR way,that is the TOTUS gave the order,and he gets the credit. You ALSO know damn full and well had this not gone as well as it did,WHOEVER was in command,whoever did the shooting,would be absolutely PILLORIED by said staff,and the OLDM.

He told the military commanders on the scene to act on their own discretion.

It struck me that the Captain of the Bainbridge was dancing on the edge of the ROE. Standing orders are to take the shot if a life is in eminent danger.

The best I'm willing to do is give Obama credit for not stopping the military.

Frightening isn't it? I did two years as a ship's company Marine and had the pleasure of conducting FAM fire for the sailors. That is NOT a pretty sight!

On the bright side, ever since the Navy started training small numbers of sailors like Marines I'm sure marksmanship has improved.

Remember, Marines have been shooting pirates from moving ships for over two hundred years! HaHaHa!
