After that little bout with the Brigate Rose (Red Brigade) in the 70’s and 80’s, the Italians don’t have much love for terrorists. But their courts, like ours, are infested with liberals. So I don’t hold out much hope of these guys being interned for long...if at all.

Your right! The US government worked with the Mafia prior to, during, and post Sicily invasion. Exactly how and how much is disputed. Rick Atkinson’s “The Day of Battle” gives a good account.

The modern Mafia, Camorra, 'Ndrangheta, and similar crime organizations have broken out of their borders and infest the “legitimate” business/government entities throughout Europe. The creation of the EU facilitated much more than just free trade.

If you’re interested, I suggest reading “Midnight in Italy” and the more recent “Gomorra”. These ruthless enterprises have little in common with the romanticized notions of the old Mafia.

It’s no different than when, during the worst part of the Iraq war, Obama and all the dems were abandoning ship for political expediency. The millions of deaths and Iraqi government collapse would have endangered the region, world, and our national security. But it would have made the Bush administration look bad. An acceptable tradeoff.
