Anyone read the terms of use for the blogs at MoveOn? It clearly states that if you're a Republican or write anything positive about President Bush you will be banned from posting.

I would like to accommodate your request, but your forthrightness shows a level of honesty that is ascent from the shills.

I don't think many of us on Townhall object to honest debate; we welcome it. What I am pointing out is a pattern of behavior that deliberately DISRUPTS the dialog, distracting the flow.

All Americans are for free speech, but what is happening is not an honest effort to relate, it is an attempt to stop speech, and I believe that professional bloggers are being paid to disrupt.

From time to time I have copied a particularly offensive liberal post into an email (along with a copy of the link to the column) and emailed it to infor@townhall.com and sometimes cc'd to josue@townhall.com and requested that the poster be banned.

In most cases, TH would probably take down their posts anyway, but I'm hoping an email brings it to their attention faster.

Good suggestion. My blog was focused a bit more narrowly. I didn't address offensive posts, but am trying to identify what the blog refers to as "disruptors," those who deliberately change the discussion from the topic of the column.

I have reason to believe that some of these may be paid shills, whose purpose is disruption, not discussion.

Many times I have thought to ignore TH completely since so many of the postings soon go off topic and degenerate into name calling food fights. It did not occur to me that the moonbats were part of a deliberate conspiracy to encourage me to give up on the site. (thanks for the heads-up gretske)

Your advice to ignore these fools is the only tactic I've thought usefull.

I might suggest that those of us who want a thoughtful, coherent thread related to the column develope a code to alert others when one of the named individuals posts disrupting nonsense. I am open to suggestion, how about "----- is a nutroot"?

TH is too valuable to have it go down to deiberate attacks.

This is a service. I welcome spirited dissent and from time to time there have been thought provoking posts from liberals with a totally different point of view.

That's a good thing, it keeps us sharp, makes us re-examine where we are coming from. We are not perfect.

However, I believe you have hit the nail on the head. I have found that the posters above are intransigent and seem to be more interested in disruption than a meaningful dialogue. I've tried to read all posts in the interest of hearing a variety of points of view. This has decreased my enjoyment of TH because the dialogue deteriorates.

I'm done, I'm going to ignore the "trolls" from now on. If other posters do so as well, I think our dialogue will be enriched.

She managed to sign on to any thread mentioning homosexuality, and jumped in with long, fairly obscene tales of her sexual exploits with various lesbians.

Not sure if she is a pro shill, or just a militant lesbian who delights in telling us far too much about her personal life, but she definitely deserves to be added to any ignore list.

I am shocked that "drivebyposting" is not on the list. He shows up, drops a few liberal talking points (on topic or not, it doesn't seem to matter), vanishes for a while, and repeats. He seems the very image of the hit and run professional shill.

I haven't seen "YouMakeMeLaugh" / "YouMakeMeLaugh2" / "YouReallyMakeMeLaugh"/etc. for a while, but I always thought someone was paying him to cut and paste as well, his posts always seeming to have almost nothing to do with the thread on which he appeared.

Don't want to be censors, but it is a forum for conservative discussion, there are plenty of alternate sites for leftists who want to call conservatives names, and it was getting a bit out of hand on TH.

Do we have reason to believe these are deliberate attempts to derail the discussion? or are we just observing the pattern that liberals in general don't know how to reason in a linear fashion, lack the ability to discipline their thoughts and distinguish between personal irritation and a logical fallacy, and operate entirely in the realm of emotion (while calling themselves uniquely rational?)

I do wonder from time to time whether certain parties are organized disruptors. Of some, I'm certain; but these show up only when a particular candidate's ox is being gored, and they're usually pretty well prepared (watch what happens when a serious shot is taken to Hillary Clinton -- she usually has a well-schooled shill take on all comers with challenges to any mention of prior scandals).

But the jetpilot/Phylo/Robert/Knight bunch don't strike me as organized or paid shills; I think they're the types who do the blog circuit mostly as a crutch to their egos, trying to assuage their low self-esteem by "proving" what fools conservatives are, and how worthwhile and intelligent they themselves are by contrast.

So I'm asking: aside from the fact that they're ill-informed and insulting, do we have any real evidence that they're organized or paid?

These posters are both frequent, and consistently off the mark. It is a classic pattern of disruption. It is well known that the minions of Soros engage in this kind of tomfoolery, and these birds fit the pattern.

I'm somewhat of a like mind as you. A few are paid shills (like HalD) but others, like Roberto, make the left look like such fools that it is hard to imagine that he would get paid for that.

Most of these people are just children (as in "immature"). The world is full of such people. They don't need to be paid to be disruptive, they thrive on it. They are intellectual arsonists, destroying reasoned debate in order to get attention.

I am hoping and praying that eventually Townhall gets some real forum software to replace the tinkertoy piece of junk they currently are running. There is tons of great forum software packages out there most of which allows for logging of IP addresses (allowing only one account and potential for banning), tracks number of posts, allows for HTML markup, and so on.

I like the sites that allow ratings such that when a post falls below a certain negative, it disappears below your threshold. Better yet, moderated forums would be excellent at TH. This can be done fairly with posting guidelines.

This is an interesting idea, if it could somehow be established that the people in question are engaging in what amounts to intentional sabotage.

I don’t think MellorSJ2 is a paid shill, I remember when he first came to TH and during one of our first debates I think it was Dullhammer who figured out that his real name is Stephen J. Mellor, and he has posted several book reviews at Amazon.com, so I think Mellor is just drawn to the conflict.

I can’t think of a single point where he and I agree, but fair is fair, I don’t think he’s a shill.


Shouldn’t someone who is put on the list get a chance to defend him or herself? If the list was posted as soon as a suspect posted in a Thread, that person would have the opportunity to defend himself if he maintains that he (or she) is not a paid shill.

Some of them are fun to challenge, and most of them can be shown to be dishonest or not arguing in good faith within three or four posts, and I have noticed that KOB is getting challenged by many people now that it’s becoming more widely known that his bark is a lot worse than his bite. Even militants like KOB, while never admitting defeat, don’t come back for more (against the same person) once he’s been soundly beaten by that person (and several people have, recently).

It is usually fun to expose their flawed arguments, but it can also derail the whole Thread, and that shouldn’t happen (and I apologize for my part in that outcome when I challenge some of these jokers).

None of this would be necessary if they had better software and more active moderators like you mentioned. It will be interesting to see how this develops, and how far the “powers that be” at TH will allow something like this to go if it is put into practice.

Never get into a p*ssing contest with another writer. When there are 400+ comments and only 25 writers on a single article, it is easy to find the 3d grade students (equivalent) conducting silly arguments about nothing of substance. Ignore them as soon as you make that judgement.

I have suspected what you say for some time now. Even when the postings have been fairly light, you can tell that DF Hal looks to be displaying his presence for his masters by attacking the most innocuous of comments. At times, some have even provoked me into a response but I have advocated just what you have: to simply ignore them.

These are among Fascist tactics used in securing Soviet and Nazi power grabs - shout down your opponents. I've seen it in the Townhall meetups where leftist 'ringers' would show up and divert the group's attention to mundane matters while controlling the sign-in email list.

Interested people would show up, always in a restraunt setting with intrusive waiters, bottom line watching managers, together with blaring TVs in the background, see that unserious matters were discussed and realize their time wasn't worth it and not be heard from again. Meanwhile, the 'UCLA college professor' would make sure no one would be able to network with them.

Needless to say, this seemingly worthwhile monthly activity, died of interest attrition, and the 'professor', no doubt, congratulated himself on a job well done.

The list of libtards you have produced is valuable. But they are not paid; they are libtards. They act as they do because they do not know why they believe what they beleive. They load up on talking points over at the KOS/DU/MvOn sites and think spewing these points is what passes for 'debate'.

Seriously could you update this list? Brian is one of the trolls here now and one of the fairly obnoxious new ones. I am reading TH less and less because they take over the dialogue and it's a long time scrolling past them to find the cogent comments. I hope TH will take a stronger stance on this as it is keeping me away from a site I used to go to first thing. Now when I read the columns it is just like a food fight.

People who love to argue with morons seem to be keeping them coming here. Not pleasant--it is damaging and destroying a once worthy conservative site. I think TH is ignoring the harm these morons and miscreants do. I think there needs to be some method of a blogger being able to collapse their comments instead of flagging them. Then if you want to read their spiel, you can click on it.
