Comment on: The Virginian

Lilly is right

Thank you Virginian

You have a talent for writing well and clearly. Further more, you are concise and to the well thought out point. I doubt that any of us could have done as well, much less better.

Your comments to Lilly are well dirercted. Lilly is the product, visa her own explanation and as best I recall, of an unusual up bringing which started overseas as the daughter of someone quite different and she went through some kind of youthful catharsistic (sic) experience with some events in a far country. Apparently she is not uneducated or short of natural intelligence, but simply went off on a tangent, and will possibly never find a balance of political thought although she is at least trying.

Hang in there Lilly. You could accidentally open a magic door some day and break in to a whole new experience, usually regarded as facing reality, not inventing reality.

My thanks too

Thank you, Moneyrunner. I sat here for five minutes 'formulating' a reply to Lilly. When I read "Lilly is right" it soured my stomach, but I got over it and clicked your link. I sure am glad I did. You are right on target, and very eloquent.

Thanks very much again for saving me the aggravation of replying to Lilly, and doing it better than I would have anyway.

There's more

I have had a long time blog that you may want ot go to

"But the greatest menace to our civilization today is the conflict between giant organized systems of self-righteousness -- each system only too delighted to find that the other is wicked -- each only too glad that the sins give it the pretext for still deeper hatred and animosity." -

liberals are not the enemy.
conservatives are not the enemy.

hatred and demonization of fellow americans is the enemy.

Not buying moral equivalence

Sorry religiouslib,

I have not been in the market for moral equivalence for a very long time; at least not since the days when Liberals made the case for the moral equivalence of the USSR and the US. Remember those glory days of the Cold War when it was said that both systems were bad because both systems had the power to destroy the world? We were as bad as – or perhaps worse than – the commissars because … (name the cause du jour: racism, sexism, the unequal distribution of income, etc.) Today, there is a curious case of amnesia on the Left when the people who came out of the rubble of the communist system told us what it was like. Of course anyone with the will to see knew what it was like under communism. But it was fashionable to disdain the shortcomings of the West, or the sins of Christians. It still is.

So no, all systems for living together are not alike. Systems that doubt their own legitimacy will fall to the systems that don’t. And calling people who believe in themselves “self righteous” is a neat bit of name calling, but it just shows people where you stand. There really are wicked systems, and there really are good systems. To fail to distinguish between them is not wisdom, but folly.

money runner

you missed the point

it says systems--plural

i was implying both sides were involved.

it was not name calling,

the quote, my friend, comes from a Christian philospher named herbert butterfield.

Point not missed

religiouslib: Rather you missed MY point.

Describing someone as "self righteous" IS name calling.

And, my friend (and you are my friend) "appeal to authority" is one of the logical fallacies.

And now to bed.

moneyrunner

it was not an attack on individuals just a food for thought post.

don't be so defensive.

not an attack on individuals?

Perhaps you and butterfield were referring to "self righteous" giraffes?

If you throw something out there as food for thought, don't be surprised if someone disagrees.

It's known as debate in most circles; hate speech if you’re in academia.

Learn to cope.

moneyrunner

The comment on moneyrunner would be:the greatest menance to our civilization today would be a conflict between giant organized systems of self righteousness.
