ECON 101
This is a masterpiece! So often the "mid-evil" media, as you call it, as well as our elected repepresentatives, choose to ignore this side of the minimum wage equation. They talk as though we don't realize (or deperately are trying to forget) that if the minimum wage increases, some of those minimum wage positions will disapear, while others will be expected to be more productive to pick up the slack. I know that some of the masses truly are morons, but (I hope) most of us are intelligent to understand that raising the minimum wage is not a gift to ALL of those at the bottom of the corporate ladder.
As an additional point, when the minimum wage goes up, there is added pressure from the rest of us on our employers to increase OUR wages as well. When everyone gets more money in their pockets, they are able to spend it less frugally, thus adding inflationary pressure to the price index. This in turn makes the dollar less mighty. Before long, the poor minimum wage earner is right back where he or she began -- scraping to get by.
If we really want to help the working poor (who I would much rather help than the welfare rich), there are much better places to go than messing with the free market. Fixing the tax code and the welfare system would be a couple of prime examples.

yep. even the college textbooks today agree that hiking the minimum wage puts undue stress on the economy. Duh.
