Comment on: Jimmy Carter's Closet

Whorestituents

Harsh!

I hope Jimmy is just trying to be "funny" in making a point, but I doubt it. Every decision we make has value in some way. While some people have trouble expressing their thoughts in a coherent way, most people can still get the drift of their meaning. We have to make decisions based on measure all the time; I would really like a Corvette but the reality is it is neither practical nor affordable for me, but I don't decide to not buy a car simply because it isn't "the one" I wanted. Yes, you can base a decision, or a vote, on which choice best fits your criteria or does the least damage.

Well said

And makes a lot of sense...

Nice try B,

but car buying doesn't involve purchasing on principle, unless you are a lib. So, the analogy doesn't wash. I appreciat the comment and I will see Ya 'round Town.

Like the sentiment or not....

"Spread your vote for a 'John'" is probably genius-level writing.

Hahahahahahaha, JC!

Well said!

I, too, really liked the "spread your vote" line. That was really great.

JC!

Nice to see you back in the writing biz.

Where ya been?

http://wherearemykeys.typepad.com/where_are_my_keys/

Yeah, and not only do they expect to

have their with you at the voting booth, they expect you to send them money too!

At least in Thailand Thaksin would throw bags of money into the crowds in order to earn their vote.

Great summary, Jimmy

It's good to have you back!

My wife is also ready to swear off McCain, and is interested in the other parties out there. But she's been a little busy lately... The Crimson Apex Solidarity Horde has a new member!

Probably.

As in "may be."

or "might be."

Good one, JC...

The best move I have made recently was to re-register as an independent. I was instantly transformed from "evil conservative" to "much sought after" independent voter.

I assume that now makes me a 7 diamond voter 'cuz I'm really good in the voter booth.

Quite a label there,

but quite good food for thought. I've been guilty of the kind of thinking you attribute to your"whorestituents". Now I'll have to think about it some more................At least I haven't donated a dime to the RNC this year. Too disgusted.

Excellent observation; Good Work JC

Thanks, Kids....

....Y'all are just too kind!

Bobbie, welcome to the deep end.

Everybody, let's give Bobbie a nice warm "Jimmy's Bar, Grill, and Pole" welcome!!

I think

... that the key point is to vote for whoever you want to.

Some people will vote for McCain even if they don't like him as a tactical vote (i.e. to leverage their anti-Obama vote).

Other people will abstain as a vote of no confidence. When voter turnout is low, then politicians of all parties wake-up and start appealing to their bases. Next time round anyway.

As a UK observer I of course cannot pass any more comment than this. el-Rushbo has made a compelling case for why Obama isn't ready for office (including the amount of triangulation he is having to do ... some of these triangles are the size of pyramids. This is why he stutters so much).

AOB:
Sometimes a lib will say to me "why bother voting, my vote doesn't count, it's only one of many."

My response shocks them:

"Thank God for that!. That's what's so wonderful about democracy. Democracy protects me from all your crazy ideas.

You can dream up all kinds of madcap schemes to make the world a better place, but you can't inflict them on me unless you run for public office and gain a political mandate.

But once you gain public office, and you screw up, then you are out! The electorate will vote you out in a landslide."

So Jimmy, use your vote, even if it's an abstention, and tell the politicians what you think about them. And go easy on the tactical voters, because they have their own role to play.

Saspirilla!

With an alfalfa stick garnish for my horse, a cold Shiner Bock for me barkeep!

Greg

That was a lovely way of expressing an idea. I liked it. I don't think j will agree. But I liked it.

Hey, JC!

I just saw the pics Scottie posted on his essay about his visit with you.

Do you own ANY shoes that aren't lawyer shoes?

I mean.... even with jeans you're wearing Lawyer Shoes!

HOLY COW!

The bar is open again and nobody told me! Hope I didn't miss SC pole dancing.

This fall's election is a tough one for me. My two Senators have done fairly well, especially Cornyn. My Rep is okay (Granger). I want to do everything possible to keep The Messiah out of the White House, but McLame isn't really worthy. Voting for Barr is pretty much a throwaway. I guess I'll look at the polls from Texas, and if McLame is an obvious winner, I'll vote for Barr. Otherwise, I might have to take the advise of the folks at http://www.getdrunkandvote4mccain.com

Jimmy you're back!

Long time no see man!
A great post man, McCain has done some, but not enough to earn my vote and Obama hasn't done anything to earn my vote! My latest post is all about McCain, feel free to check it out, I've got a few other things up as well.

Again with the lawyer shoes....

....at least they ain't pink.

And I was holding a BEER.....

....and not a chiwawa.

Nicely stated, Greg...

...I've always disliked those "get out the vote" drives for the sake having people just participate. In My dream world, there would only be one vote cast.....MINE!

And a round on the House...

....and I didn't forget Yer margarita, Crawdaddy......a lil' salty.

JAM APPLE!

Where you been? I'd a knowed those feet anywhere over at Scottie's place. I've been rode hard and now so parched after my move to Chicago that ya gotta help me! Lemon Drop, sugar on the rim.
And,yep, at least they wasn't pink!!! Glad to see you back...

LOL, JC!

You're in Texas, and can't spell "chihuahua"?

Yikes!

I just posted a fun new essay on my blog. Take a test to help you decide on values/candidates!

JC, hold the salt

I never really needed the salt on the rim for margaritas, especially with my blood pressure already elevated (and not only because of politicians). I DO use the salt for tequila shots, but we'll save those for celebrating SC's next pole dance.

A Critical Error

Friend Jimmy, your post is thought provoking and well written as always. Unfortunately, I believe you have made a critical error of categorization that invalidates your argument. The center of your post is an equivalence you draw between “friends” and “votes” based on the common idea of “value.” However, you limit your definition of “value” to that which must be earned, and consequently be observed and measured. But what of the possibility of intrinsic value, or value based on the ability of a thing to do something?

Moreover, “friends” and “votes” are in different categories by virtue of their origins. I would submit to you that the vote is a man made tool of government and has value only to the extent that it functions as intended within that government. It is a tool, and as with any tool, it can be used or abused, and may be used for more than one thing. Friends, on the other hand, as with all human beings, are God-created and God-given with an intrinsic value apart from what they can do for you. This is why, as you correctly note, you do not abuse strangers, acquaintances, or even enemies. They are human beings made in the image of God, however, much they corrupt and/or deny that.

A critical error cont.

Nowhere have you provided an actual argument for why the vote tool may not be used against Obama by wielding it for McCain not because we agree with McCain but because of the need to stop Obama. I, like any good conservative, will have to hold my nose, maybe even search out a good gas mask, to do so; McCain was not my choice and I agree with Hugh Hewitt who has repeatedly said that McCain is a great American but a lousy Senator. Most of the negative aspects regarding McCain’s record and policies are true, yet despite that, compared to Obama, it is the contrast of blackest night and day (OK, maybe twilight?).

Thus, I fear your post rises to DH3 disagreement but quickly dives to DH0. Alas, truly unbecoming of the Jimmy Carter of Townhall!

(Terminology explanation: http://theinterface.blogtownhall.com/2008/04/23/the_pyrami d_of_disagreement__a_critical_tool_for_analyzing_arguments. thtml )

my vote

I'll be checking the polls from Texas, since I vote absentee. If it looks like McLame is safely ahead, I'll vote for Baldwin or Barr. If it is anywhere close, I'll partake in the advise of the website http://www.getdrunkandvote4mccain.com. Maybe I'll have one of the margaritas, no salt, that you are getting so good at making, before I vote.

Down the line in the Foat Wuth area, there are a bunch of races, usually, that are Repub vs Libertarian, with no Dim in sight. I always vote for the Libertarian in those races.

Face..

May I ask in regard to stopping Obama with a McCain vote: how does it occur that my lack of vote gets put in Obama's stack of tallies?

This seems also like a flawed argument for voting For someone, yes?

Again with the pole.....

How many times do I have to say this: I DON'T DO THAT FOR FREE.

Hello Again, JimmyQuarter

Well, I wouldn't call them whorestituents. More live Pavlovians or Scared Rabbits.

As for friendship, I think that is the main problem in D.C. - too many people want to be pals with eachother rather than do the hard thing.

SC

obviously you haven't been payin' 'tension to the stacks of dollar bills we have before us as we gather by the pole stage....

Crawfish

DOLLAR bills?

Are you kidding me?

I didn't say

what demoninations were in them stacks....

SC...

...your question, "how does it occur that my lack of vote gets put in Obama's stack of tallies?" is an excellent question. It partly depends on how close the race is. The closer the race, the greater the impact of each vote and each nonvote. Technically, yes, not voting for anyone would be construed as helping neither candidate. But I believe our goal should be either to help the best candidate win, or, and here is the critical point, to help the worst candidate to loose if the worse candidate could really do that much damage to our country with his policies. Take a look around the web at what Obama wants for our country. I've got several recent posts over at the Interface in that regards. I'd rather have a lousy Senator as president than an out and out treasonous Senator as president. (Not that I'd opt for either if'n I had ma druthers!)

Hey, Steveface....

...interesting critique, and funny to boot.

Your solution is the "lesser of two evils." Well, I say the "lesser evil" is still evil. Or another way of saying it would be the "lesser of two wrongs." Well, wrong is still wrong.

Also, you can't state that one who doesn't vote is helping to elect Obama. Someone who doesn't vote is simply not playing the game, so therefore has no influence on the outcome.

Buenas tardes.

Cthulhu '08

My son is sporting the above on a bumper sticker. His reasoning is that faced with choosing the less of two evils, he prefers to support 100% evil as characterized by Cthulhu in the H.P. Lovecraft books. Why settle for second best.

Point Well Taken!

You have a way of saying things, JimmyC! Anyway, reading through the other comments, I think I'd go with what Interface has said about votes and friends. "Value" can be such an esoteric thing, not even really a "thing" at times.

Obama IS bad enough that I'll vote against him despite not being too keen on McCain. That's how Obama will fail this election. I mean, I mostly just wanna see him cry and stuff. SCHAUDENFREUDE is a highly valuable emotion for me, ha ha.

Shameless Plug Alert

Fresh post up over at the Heartland. Come one come all.

Jam Apple

I just posted a new essay of sputtering conservative outrage.

Come on DO-O-O-O-WN!

That's assuming you still check in from time to time, and haven't totally yielded to disgust.

Certainly tempting!!!!!

Hmm

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

Hey JC, how's it hanging?

Shameless plug time, I have a three-part installment up at my place looking at McCain's recent legislative record..

I Agreed with You...

concerning John McCain. But I might have to change my mind. I am printing an article tomorrow concerning the Dumbocraps and oil that might change your mind.

Also, check my site for new articles (one that I promised I would write 35 years ago).

Jimmy, where are you?

Even slacker Cynewulf has a couple posts up in October...

hey jimmy

I'm telling everyone how to vote to make it simple for y'all. Come on by.

Dangit, Jimmy

The bar is friggin' EMPTY! You haven't even been seen commenting anywhere. Whazzup, Tex?

elections are okay

stop by JimmyC. thanks.

Jam Apple!!!

I left a comment yesterday...but it poofed! I wanted to know who the girl is keepingyou from being first!!? Is the bar ever gonna open??

Let's open the bar..

...on election night while We watch the returns! We'll have to do it early in the morning, say by 10:00 a.m. EST; before the press claims the polls are closed and obama is the winner.

Thanks

for stopping by my blog. "Spread your vote" is awesome. Come on, people do not let this happen.

Jimmy!

Help a brother out, man. What's the talk 'round the homefront regarding the complete lack of defense and the absolute horrid play from our backup QBs?

The defenses in the Big 12 are better than the one from Valley Ranch, and they get torched weekly!

I've seen Texas high school QBs that were more competent than B. Johnson and B. Bollinger.

Hay Crawdaddy....

...they shouldn't have no back-up QB anynow...Hell, Staubach seemed to do just fine with his broken finger...

Defenses of the Big 12?!! Are You kidding Me?! Did You miss the Longhorn game? Don't get Me started.

And, yes, those high schoolers are probably more competent because they haven't signed those guaranteed contracts.

Don't forget to come back for Yer Margarita, lil' salty....Here shortly. I'll be by after while to Yer place.

I saw the Horns and Raiders

and I still say that those defenses are better than the one infesting Valley Ranch.

Heck, I do occasionally see a good Texas high school game on cable up here, and THOSE defenses at least ATTEMPT to cover a receiver every now and then.

(saw Euless Trinity vs Fossil Ridge not too long ago, and the Trojans looked worthy of their national ranking at the time)

Thanx for the Rita...might be needing a bunch of them Wednesday, as I watch the glow of south Philly burning from 25 miles away.

and south Philly might burn

no matter which side wins, along with south Dallas, south Chicago, northwest Jacksonville, south central El Lay, all of Atlanta, most of DC, Liberty City area of Miami, N'awlins, parts of Houston, East St Louis, most of Memphis, Cleveland, Cincy.....

Riot and destroy to celebrate...or riot and destroy because racism defeated their Chosen One.

Jimmy!

You are slacking on your blog as much as I am. Well, almost. I do have a new one up today.
Hope all's well!

Check us out...

http://pjb.blogtownhall.com/

Oh, wait...um,.....

Jimmy

Stop by when you get a chance.

This place used to be

a happening bar. Now there's a major layer of dust. What up, JC?

Well JC, you got me...

...I went out and voted straight GOP. Lotta good it did. The GOP must purge the arrogant elites that are running and move back toward a conservative and Nationalist position. Move away from internationalism. I don't see many of them doing that, however. Looks like the only one speaking up is Arnold and hes saying to move to center/left. I certainly can't go there. Palin seems to have retired back to her comfy Gov's chair. It seem everyone has run for the hills. The GOP is like a house with a couple of lights on but no one is at home.
Hey stop by sometime JC. DD
