That's just making it when homes are so expensive, cars aren't cheap, clothing adds up, childcare for working couples, food, and that's for a famiy of 4. I had 4 children plus myself, and my smallest child was 6'1" and that was a girl. My taller daughter was 6'2" and the boys were 6'4'. and nobody wore a reular sized shoe. I always had to special order their shoes and clothes.
After paying the bills, I scraped just enough by to start a 401K which Obammy wants to tax now. I shutter to think what else he'll tax to keep the poor fat and happy.

I say comfortable only because that is about what my dad makes and his house is almost paid off...mind you the house I grew up in was purchased 20 years ago, so the mortgage is a LOT lower than by standards today!
So depending, it might be comfortable. But you are right by today's standards.

$120,000 would be pretty comfortable to me. That would allow me to pay my mortgage, my bills, get a new car, spoil my kids a little more, maybe have a vacation, and start thinking about a retirement. That would actually be pretty comfortable for a lot of the middle class around here. Comfortable depends a lot on where you live, and how extravagant your tastes are, but I think I can safely say that for most, comfortable is about ten percent more than they are making now.

to live within your means. We did fine but I still clipped coupons and had a home within my means. Now remember, my children are your age. Let's look at it this way, you are 2 teachers or a nurse and carpenter and together you make 125k. you struggled for the first 20 years, this is what you are making midlife. You have a home and 2 children. Now, Obama and Bill Richardson say you are rich, so now they want to take more of your hard earned money to "spread it around". That extra money was to start a 401K or if you are self employed, an IRA. Not only are you paying taxes, but when you go to take your IRA/401K out in your golden years, after 55, you now have to pay higher taxes on it. 401 k/IRAs were created to avoid any taxes when your income become fixed. If that doesn't make the regular person uncomfortable, something is wrong.

At that income, you don't get tuition assistance from the state or federal government for your children's college education. I had 4 children, one is disabled...and they all atteended community then state colleges, on my dime. That's doing the loaves and the fishes. 120K still ain't rich!

great minds think alike
One of the biggest problems that caused this mess is people not living within their means.
I personally don't make anywhere NEAR $120K a year and I have bills and a child, but I make do and my kid wants for nothing. Is it hard when there is something I really want? Sure. Is it hard when there is more that I wish I could do? Absolutely. But this isn't a forever thing. I am still working through it and what I am doing now isn't the last stop. It is a step.
Exactly what I wrote about in the blog I have up about Tito the Builder and the one about nothing in life being guarenteed.

For most people 45-60, they are paying the principal and not the interest, don't have children as dependents (or as many), and are paying federal and state taxes (some even pay city taxes), and then there is sales tax. We are at the time in our lives where we are closer to the horizon than theacme, and soon enough we will be retiring...to a fixed income.

But I guess it's relative....I make far less and am doing o.k. Like many conservatives, i live within my means and work hard to improve the life of my family.I have a multitude of skills and will never starve..even if there's a depression someday. That being said, we shouldn't even fall into the trap of defining wealthy. It's none of anyone in the government's business to make assertions about the morality of being rich, or what their charitable obligations are. We should all revisit the constitution and remember what the job of government really is. Snap out of it conservatives. They work for us, not the other way around. When we entertain this division we encourage it.

Amerisweet: my post from earlier
Hope you don't mind me sharing my recent post on this subject.
Obama calls resistance to socialism selfish. The truth is that conservatives believe in giving to charity on a voluntary basis. Apparently, this is supported by recent studies that show conservatives give to charity way more than liberals. Forced donations to specific causes is socialism...not to mention a provably less efficient way of helping anyone in need. Earlier in the history of our nation , people addressed the needs of their neighbors and family without the help of government. The local churches also played a large role in charity. This burden has been shifted from interested parties to somewhat disinterested parties....just another chapter in the book of liberal short-sightedness. Another nasty result of this forced compassion is the ever increasing culture of dependence. When your neighbor helps you, you are reluctant to take advantage of them, theres a built in shame factor... when government helps, it is easier to disconnect morally from the benefactor. Obama's lack of wisdom is indeed dangerous. If he wins , it's one large step backward for selfdetirmination .... one giant leap for government dependence.

Thanks for stopping by and feel free. Barry and the Democrats? He is not earning his senatorial pay as far as I am concerned.
Our Constitution is not "a living document" which we change at whim without it being by the people and for the people. At present, it is at the disposal of politicians and for the politicians.
This is our second marriage. Together we raised 6 children, one is handicapped and we still provided for five college educations. However, the kids had to contribute too. I had 2 kids in college for the same 4 years and for 3 of those years, it was 3 kids. $120,000 is comfortable, but knocks you out of the box for tuition assistance. we live modestly, but feeding and clothing 6 kids, all over 6" tall and 3 of them girls ain't cheap either. NJ has the highest real estate taxes in the nation, and then there is the mortgage. I work for the health benefits, and I have a professional license, so I shouyld meet my own needs.

In my city, we have a guy running for city council that wants to make minimum wage $15/per hour. Sure! Lets see some more jobs go away and never come back! Oh and he wants to give free health care, child care and something else. He also believes in socialism. I kid you not, that was in his bio! Good grief!
People need to learn to live within their means. In CA everything is so over priced, but that does mean if you make $80,000 that you go out and buy a $750,000 home. And then a few months down the road realize, hey you can't pay for that. Now what? Oh 1-800-helpme! Compliments of the United States Government!

Sue: The automakers want more
I will read your article in a few. I am in Florida and on dial-up..so be patient...the typing keeps cutting out..due to pop ups and animation. I am posting a new blog on the automakers going with the UAW to the beggar's ball at Pelosi's office. Look for it by 2pm EST.
The market is in the tank, and the answer is not extending unemployment or more bailouts. The American peolple need to be innovative, not lethargic.
As for Corzine, he went into politics because Goldman Sachs was letting him go. NJ is in a fiscal crisis, and now 2 days afer the election in a swing state Phil. mayor announces 108,000,000 deficit. POLITICS!

I saw that about the automakers. I am printing out your letter to read it.
I see that Reid is meeting with Leiberman to throw him under the bus. Heard about Pelosi, but apparently she is wielding her gavel power and Dems and Repubs are getting sick of it.
Corzine seems to have done wonders for New Jersey. Stop the madness. Almost as good as Gov Arnold.
I saw that about the deficit. Good grief. What the heck? This is so out of control. It really is.
I see the Dow continues to tank. I was going to buy, but decided no. Just waiting for my check on what I sold. My dad sold half the other day. He also wants to know how he can get on the entitlement list. I was laughing.

the old folks, but am back now. We have mostly 401Ks, 403Bs, and some IRAs. We keep most of out assets in property. I'll get a small pension & we will sell the CPA practice in time. I have some J&J stock, and will keep that. It is only about 100 shares. I prefer US Savings bonds, and have them for the children.
I will stopby other blogs and let them know what I posted. Who knows, maybe I am nuts, but rather than blog I feel we need to get a grassroots action going. Look what it did for OBAMA. He had groups of 40 spammers sending out his message. We should do the same, but with solutions, not gripes.

Today while being on hold, I was on the web and I went to the site that Rush had been talking about. It is for the new administration. The address is http://www.change.gov. They have their health insurance plan up there and everything from Homeland Security, etc...under the agenda heading. If you get a chance, look at the health care section.
I do not want to sit and complain, but a lot of the items on the agenda seems to favor the "world" and the lower income for almost everything.
Now as for grassroots, I did happen to go to the site of http://www.moveon.org. I don't like that site, but I went for one reason. I wanted to see the organization that they had and also everything they did for him. It was very well done.

Sue: Feeling your pain is called empathy
I know how you feel. My problem with the republicans is what I see here, all talk and no action. I sent dozens of letters to my representatives, andin each state that I own property. I have 4 properties, one is undeveloped and one was purchased at a bargain in an adult community for our parents.
Even if the bloggers don't beleive in unions, they should support alternative ideas that leave both parties wanting and room for each party to improve. The Dems learned the hard way that apathy is not an answer and took action in 08. Unfortunately, I think they backed the wrong candidate.
I will continue rally for what I believe in, which is more responsibiity and accountability for healthcare, the fair tax, and improving lifestyles through motivation, not stagnation, whic i where I think we are headed. Check out http://www.bondinfo.org., his pastor holds conservatve values. I checking your site out now.
