The real travesty is
that seventy percent of the citizenry want the death penalty, but the legislature passed this law anyway. Nothing like being ruled by elites that know better than you.

This sounds like Masachusetts
Where the people petitioned to revoke same-sex marriage, were stonewalled by the legislature, won in the state supreme court and still couldn't get a vote in the legislature. Nothing like a government in touch with the people.
Or perhaps the Feds trying to ram an illegal alien amnesty bill through in less than a week before the people had a chance to know what was going on last summer.
Or OSHA tinkering with the regs in such a way it would put every gun shop out of business under the guise of workplace safety.
The list just keeps growing. Cue Pink Floyd's "Us and Them".

Another instance of the Great Divide
Scottie,
Thanks again for the comments - not sure if my comment on your blog in response to your question was successfully posted or not, I'll have to check that after I'm done here.
It is distressing to see increasingly frequent instances of legislators and judges deciding they are going to do what they think is best, despite what the majority of the citizens think about the issue. Unfortunately, it is also hard to see this situation improving. If some elected leader were able to figure out a way to truly "starve the beast" of government so that we could start to have a substantive discussion on the proper roles of federal, state and local governments, as well as private citizens and religious and charitable organizations, I'd be a lot more optimistic about our nation.
