I agree, and a succinct way of making

the point I have never been able to make succinctly. The basic tenets of conservatism, fiscal, social, whichever, are the same and revolve around personal liberty and personal responsibility.

The whole idea of being fiscally conservative but socially liberal would mean concurrently holding two opposing thoughts, personal responsibility is good and personal responsibility is bad. Holy cognitive dissonance, Batman. So it's OK to hold people responsible for their poor financial decisions, or to allow them to be rewarded for good ones, but they get a pass for other kinds of decisions?

Which is all the more incongruent due to the fact that when your social liberalism encourages irresponsible behaviour, or fails to discourage it, these days the rest of us pay for it directly through tax monies for gubmint programs/subsidies. How can you say you want the gubmint's hand out of your pocket while at the same time encouraging behaviour whose consequences will likely lead to exactly that?
