They want us to believe that controlling the border is impossible without this legislation. Horse Puckey! We are at war and currently under orange alert! The president can do whatever he deems necessary to defend the homeland under the auspices of the current war resolution.
Secondly, more than half of the illegals here came in on the Decider's watch! As I recall, we've been at war for all but nine months of his two terms as president. Even Bill Clinton has a better enforcement record.
What's the plan for education reform? Do we simply stop educating children altogether until we have an entire generation of illiterates and then declare the problem unsolvable? I am truly disgusted with the Republican Party.

Flag, simply excellent
You beat me to the draw. The topic I'd selected for my essay this week was also scamnesty, but you've done an excellent job here, and I can't think of a thing to add. Now I have to go back to the drawing board.
It's certainly interesting that so many "conservatives" have hitched their wagons to Bush's falling star on this issue. Snow's career is over; he has no credibility left at all after this fiasco. I hope he has his retirement portfolio in order, because he's dead in the water after this gig. Lott's shot himself in the head, too.
I also think it's very instructive as to why Ashcroft quit as AG; I'm sure he was told this was a big priority of the second term, and as a strong law-and-order and conservative, probably didn't want anything to do with it. Same with former press-sec Scott McClellan.
That should have been a BIG hint that something bad was coming down the pike. I sure missed it, though, and don't recall anyone else picking up on it, either.

Hi Flag, great article and
I am curious about your perspective on immigration as it relates to the black community, and the following issue in particular.
Pasadena Phil just posted about how in LA a group of local black leaders (not Al and Jesse mind you) and Minutemen were jailed for protesting against illegal immigration.
I am constantly amazed at how quickly blacks appear to have fallen from grace, as it were, among liberals, the MSM and (most white) social activists as the victim of preference in favour of hispanics. I also find it interesting that this happens at the time were numerically the (legal) hispanic population exceeded that of blacks (thank you Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood).
I am certain that there is going to be some kind of reaction from the black community over this, and the only thing that I'm pretty sure of is that they won't all re-register as Republicans. Would you be able to enlighten me at all as to how the black community views this issue and what might happen with respect to it? Not that I'm asking too much, mind you.

I'll give it a whirl, but i can't relly speak to for the whole black community.
From my perspective, blacks and hispanics have a strange, often strained relationship; they are after all taking the place of blacks as the "minority of choice" that the Dems pander to. But so long as the Dems keep pandering to blacks, many aren't going to leave the Democrat Party because they are too closely wedded to it. This is the Party that they have known as their political home for many years, and they are not going to leave it without a fight.
As for illegal immigration itself, the black community is not at all pleased with it from what i have witnessed. Blacks feel that hispanic immigrants are taking jobs that used to be entry level positions for blacks, or what used to be good summer jobs for black youth and have depressed wages so much, that blacks have been forced from the market. I know from some conversations that I have had, and heard on campus that there is some serious resentment towards illegals from a good amount of black youth.
Thanks for the question, and I hope my answer shed a little light for you. You have me thinking now, and I may just have to blog on this issue...so thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for the answer Flag,
I look forward to the follow-up.
I always find it interesting that when I hear about race relations it usually involves whites and someone else, black, hispanic, Asian, etc., and there is not much talk that I come across about non-white interracial relationships, other than to generally lump them together as underrepresented minorities, i.e. victims. Wonder if that has anything to do with most talking heads being white liberals?

That could very well be the problem, as white liberals tend to see everyone not like themselves as "victims". White people, not all but a lot, have a tendency to see race relations as only being an issue between blacks and whites; I know for a fact that there are racial differences and some strife between the very minority groups that the liberals profess to care so much about. They have blinders on because the black "leaders" they listen to only talk about black/white relations.
And FYI, I will have that new article up in a couple of days, maybe even this evening sometime, so keep a check on it and spread the good word!

That photo of Lott is priceless. I missed that part of his groveling road show. And it was talk radio that tried to put some perspective on the witch hunt that followed his clumsy attempt at gratuitousness. So now, Lott thinks talk radio is a problem that should be dealt with. What we don't know is why. I'm really curious what incentives or inducements have been offered to these Senators to support something that at least 70% of their constiuents oppose. Except Ted Kennedy, he seems to be able to get away with murder, or at least negligent homicide.

Va. Patriot & Pasadena Phil
Va. Patriot: Yeah, Walnut Cove is pretty small, but we're in a good spot. Just about 20-25 minutes from Winston-Salem (depending on traffic), around 35 minutes or so from Greensboro, and maybe 45 or so from Martinsville, Va. And we have Hanging Rock State Park practically in our back yard; we may not have a lot in Stokes County, but we can get to it fast!
As to the support for this bill, you have to be right; the Binks truck has to have been backed up for these guys. Even the biggest dullard could see that no one is supporting this amnesty scheme, so there have to have been some serious back room dealing going on on this one!
Pasadena Phil: I'm like Kobe Bryant; I just wanna win....no scratch that, I'm like Tim Duncan who finds a way to win. And being on this side of the issue is so obvious that even liberals think it's a bad idea and a bad bill! maybe one day our "representatives" will figure it out and stop trying to ram it down our throats.

Flag, FYI,
one of the reasons I find this subject matter interesting is that when I have in the past lived in other countries (Thailand and Mexico to be precise), I observed plenty of what here would be called overt racism (but folks over there just saw it as a normal part of their culture, natural order of things kind of stuff), and frankly I found it much worse and endemic than the North American experience, at least what I have seen of it.
For example, there is a pecking order in Asia, and everyone is aware of it it and this becomes quite apparent when talking to people there. It's been a while, but it goes something like this: Japan/China are on top (which one depends where exactly you are), followed by Korea, Thailand, Malysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and so on down the line.
I also found certain views that were very held uniformly by Thais. Darker skin is considered ugly; many girls (and even men) use skin lightening lotion and avoid the sun at all costs. They see Western women sunning themselves at the beach and think they're bonkers. You should see Thai TV shows, the actors must bathe in bleach because they are almost literally white (think bone-white) as opposed to the pinkish that most 'white' people really are; I found it quite off-putting actually.
Also, they don't like people from India because Thais find that they smell. Mind you Thais have a reputation for personal cleanliness in that part of the world, but still.
The social strata in Mexico literally resemble that which the Democrats would have you believe in the US. A friend of mine, from the upper class in Mexico, helped me get a job there teaching. There are naturally blonde and red-headed women there, and their blood is mostly Castillian. From my observations the more Native blood, and therefore darker, someone is, the lower they are in the social-economic order, and there is not exactly a lot of mobility in their society.
If you take a bus ride that goes across country and through small hamlets that are obviously crushingly poor, you will see that the people there are pretty much all pureblood Natives. And I have since read about black Mexicans, and that they receive the worst treatment of all.
However, my friend said that since all Mexicans are Mestiso (and apparently that was a government proclamation at some point) they are all of mixed blood and therefore the same, so racism is not a problem in Mexico. I guess the libs must have bought that too, cause no one ever talks about racism there despite its blatancy.

I feel you! I knew a Mexican guy that I worked with, and he would go off if anyone said that he looked like an Indian (which he did) because he felt that Indians were somehow inferior to Mexicans. I also noticed that he had very little nice to say about other Hispanics, such as Ecuadoreans, Cubans, or Dominicans...they were also considered some type of inferior race by him and his ilk. The Mexicans have their own racism and racist tendencies to deal with!
I also had a classmate from Brazil a couple of semesters ago who told us about the Brazilian government pronouncement that there were no distinct racial groups in Brazil, only Brazilians. He felt that the program to "unite" Brazilians was just a scam to keep the different ethnic groups from attempting to do anything abut the obvious discrimination that some of them were facing. He also felt that it was a way for the ruling elite to insulate themselves from any type of political challenge from someone representing a minority or oppressed group in the country; the thinking was that everyone was just a Brazilian, then no one could say that they were being discriminated against.
That makes for a pretty interesting theory he proposes, huh? And lest I forget, I believe that the Brazilian government has finally decided to recognize that there are different ethnic and racial groups that make up the Brazilian people.
