Wanted: Conservative Presidential Candidate

Hunter '08

The only person running currently that fits your criteria is Duncan Hunter.

Republican voters still get to decide this. Money only buys elections when people act like sheep. If 80% of Republicans are indeed seeking a conservative, we can nominate one. We can nominate Duncan Hunter. The money players won't like it and are trying to convince us only Rudy, Romney, or McCain can win. Hogwash. 49% of people will never vote for Hillary. Only 60% voted last time and turnout was the difference. My belief is Rudy would push turnout down. There might even be a third party, splitting the vote. Give Americans a chance to vote for a candidate who WILL secure the border and watch what happens to turnout. Americans want their government to fulfill it's most basic responsibility.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

Higher power?

I'm new to your blog, and I like what I see. (referred by http://conservativesense.townhall.com/)

Can you expand on #1? I don't understand why a belief in a higher power is requisite, and first on the list, to boot. If you had everything else on the list except #1, could you still vote for that candidate?

Personally, I don't think conservatism depends on religious belief.

Higher Power = Higher Accountability

Despite checks and balances and separation of powers, the President of the United States holds a powerful position. As the old saying goes, power tends to corrupt.

If a President does NOT believe he or she will be held accountable by God or some form of "cosmic justice", then he or she thinks it is possible to "get away" with something as long as Congress doesn't discover it and hold him or her accountable.

I'd rather have a President who has an "eternal" perspective.

Can atheists be "good" people? Yes, but who defines good? And the past 100 years is full of historical examples of professed atheist leaders who have killed far more people than all of the "relgious" wars combined.

RE: Also can win should be a criteria

This is a great list of qualities I to would like to see in a presidential candidate.

However it is lacking one very important and practical quality - an ability to win.

#15 somewhat addesses that, but not completely.

Of the major candidates formally or informally running I support Fred Thompson as the candidate that comes closest to meeting the above criteria that has a chance to win.

Fred Thompson and the criteria.

1) Fred Thompson clearly does believe in a higher power. How strong is his faith I do not now, but he certainly does believe in the Christian God though to this point he has not worn his faith on his sleeves.

2)Senator Thompson has shown a willingness to clearly articulate his position on several controversial issues clearly and unambiguously. Issues that certainly will cost him votes with some of the electorate. Among these issues abortion, gun rights and his support of Scooter Libby. That at least shows some courage of convictions.

3)Proven Leader. Other candidates have a stronger resume here as they include several governors. Mitt Romney for example. (Someone I would support if he gets the nomination but someone I am also skepitcal about in terms of all his recent conversions to conservative positions.) The other candidates with true executive experience at this time don't seem to be gaining traction and I question whether they could beat a Hillary /Obama ticket.

With that said, Fred Thompson has taken on leadership roles in Chairing the Scooter Libbly Defense Fund, chaperoning Judge John Roberts through the confirmation process and was Chairman of U.S. Senate Govermental Affairs Committee. It should also be noted that none of the major Democrat candidates have high level executive experience.

4. Senator Thompson still needs to come out in more detail on this, but of the major candidate Senator Thompson seems to be the one that is most enthusiastically embracing the Enforcement First approach vs. the Amnesty/Comprehensive immigration reform approach. This is very important issue and could be a critical issue in term of winning both in the primary and the general. I am hoping that I am correct in my early interpretation of where Senator Thompson is coming from.

5)Fred Thompson cleary recognnizes the Islamo / Fascist threat for what it is. He has also displayed some willingness to not be politically correct in how he addresses this issue and other issues such as stemming the tide of illegal immigration. Being willing to do that is a very important quality needed in the next president.

6)Fred Thomspon is on record as being very supportive of Israel and not having a whole lot of patience for Islamo/Fascist rhetoric and the anti-semitic rhetoric of the UN.

7. Fred Thompson is strongly opposed to judical activism and supports a strict constructionist view of the Constitution.

8.

Conservative Presidential Candidate

What you are seeking is really a God because the candidate you are looking for doesn't exsist.

Thanks

Thanks for reading my blog Walrus. I must say that I agree wholeheartedly. Like he said the belief in a higher power is necessary. Personally i dont believe if that person is of a particular religion. As long as that canidate can truly show that he/she does believe like someone else said, they cant get away with things just because congress doesnt catch them.

Alan Keyes Fits Nicely

I really think that Alan Keyes fits nicely into your criteria of a conservative Republican candidate for President.

Unfortunately, I don't believe he has a chance. The media has consistently, (as has the mainstream Republican leadership), denied him debate opportunities along with the other presidential candidates.
