The story I found puts it in a slightly different frame of reference. It's not so much finding someone to rebut the prosecution as it is finding someone "...who could back up Jefferson's legal theories on the duties of a congressman."

My guess --- They have someone in mind who agrees with Jefferson's take money and run (for re-election) theories, but they have to wait until after his parole hearing on June 8 to put him on a witness list.

It is interesting that this is taking so long. Stevens was indicted, arrested, tried and convicted in under 6 months. This has been dragging on for years. :(
