Just Some Thoughts
I'm Offended!

Clearly a crock. What can you say? The Nobel doesn't mean anything anymore, because it's just a platform for the liberal agenda.
The biggest victim is the Nobel itself, as it loses any semblance of credibility as anything other than a political seal of approval for rampant liberalism.

Yeah, not much more to say
And I don't expect much more than what you wrote or what I said because I think it is so obvious. But I had to vent on this one. It is truly that obsurd.
I, too, had the thought of the Nobel's irrelevancy. I almost think they should stop giving it, or at least stop hiding behind the auspice that it is not ideologically driven. When they do that, they hurt themselves. And, also, they hurt the world. When something as (previously) prestigious as the Nobel Peace Prize becomes a political tool rather an effort to honor those who truly make a meanigful difference, the ideas of peace are cheapened.
This does not negate the true acts that people do, but since the world pays more attention to those who win these things, its inaccurate to say there is no effect.
Its too bad, but does lead to the conclusion that the award does need some serious overhaul, maybe even scrapping.
Alas.

Yep.
Even the Nobel for literature was tarnished when Tookie Williams the convicted -- and now thankfully executed -- murderer was nominated for a couple of silly children's books.
It was transparently an anti-death-penalty move, and nothing more, since the books themselves were puerile trash.
And of course, AlBore's award trashed the cedibility even for the Science award.
You'd think it would be pretty hard to politicize hard science.
You'd be wrong.

Nobel has lost all meaning. It's a political, leftists, celebrity contest devoid of merit. A new prize should be created that hopefully won't be tainted. I'm wondering if Nobel is rolling in his grave?

Yup. Not much more to add. Nobel is rolling in his grave.
But on a bigger scale, what does all this say about the world we live in? I just had this thought, but it is really kind of scary. Is this indicative of a world where its not the merits of the thought that counts but rather the sentiment of the thought that counts? I think it is leaning this way. Its not so much that good acts an true good doesn't exist. Indeed, it may even exist in some of this trash, but its certainly not what is celebrated. What is celebrated is the sentiment rather than the truly meritorious and defendable position.
This is a huge shift from say 40 years ago when reason was supreme. People thought and worked through problems based on dedication and hard work. Now it is feeling your way through it to bring people together. But no one's coming together, rather the divide is in many ways getting bigger.
Awards like this only make it so, and until some meaningful change comes, that will continue.

When I saw that headline this morning I thought it was a gag!
After some consideration, I can see why the uber-liberal Norwegians would chose Obama. He has been steadily engaged in weakening the U.S., economically, militarily, and constitutionally.
That has long been the goal of our detractors; why would they not seek to reward that behavior?
Nobel would be just fine with his selection. After inventing dynamite, and apparently feeling remorseful for all the money his WMD garnered, he set up the Peace Prize to recognize those who worked to disband standing armies.
I'm only surprised that BJ hasn't gotten one!

Good points, but I still don't think that helps state that the award is important.
Sure, they may want to pick him, but the award was once fairly well respected. Now, it is a farce. What happened? Why the change?

VDad, it's obvious to me
Liberalism requires the suspension of rational thought. Clearly, the Nobel committee suffers that affliction.

I really don't care
what their "reason" was for giving Obama the prize. It sends out the wrong message and I think you're right, it will ultimately hurt him. I was at a wine tasting yesterday and at a Brithday dinner later. People were talking about it at both places. Today I was at Lowes and, even there, I heard a couple of people talking. No one was in agreement with the award. Every body saw it as pure folly.

The Left wonders too
When Time, Newsweek, CBS and other outlets think this is nonsense, something is really absurd about giving this award to a guy who wouldn't know real peace if it bit him. Peace is gotten when free peoples are willing to stop tyrants. It is not just an absence of war. But boy howdy, the Europeans just love this one since it dissed our military and Bush. Drop by anytime.

It has been very interesting to hear people talk about it.
It seems a lot of people, even those on the left, think it is a bit of a farce.

Yeah, you're right.
And that may be a part of it-- a rejection of Bush. Which is a shame. I really don't get the hang up on him and why people continue to harp on him.
But I guess its probably a bit naive to think we don't do that with other nations' leaders. But on the other hand, something is inherently different with ours... Our government is still far different, and I think better (even as it drifts left) than anywhere else in the world.

in more ways than you and I can think of, VA Dad.
Nither you nor I (nor any of those posting here) have a "lock" on intelligence. Others throughout the world are having the same thoughts that we are. This type of "thought" will hurt both the Nobel Committee and the Obama Administration.

Did the Nobel prize ever mean anything?
Woodrow Wilson, Arafat, Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Baroque? Did anybody important in the cause of liberty ever win for doing anything?
Even the best winners generally had a pretty clear tie to globalism, socialism or Progressivism.
I think it is like the MSM most of it relevance comes from the credibilty we lend it.
Obviously O doesn't deserve any such thing but few prize winners have.
Until Reagan gets it for ending the cold war it is meaningless drivel. And even then he should refuse. If he could.
The entire prize can be summed up in the words of Karl Marx "The meaning of PEACE is the absence of opposition to socialism."

To all those I did not respond to
My apologies. I really try to respond to everyone, but October was tough on time...
Working, school, mock trials (for some reason I thought it'd be a good idea-- ok, it was (we did well), but it was a lot of work, more than I expected) and family just have kept me from here...
Anyway, I won't let that happen again...
