Will they ever

wake up? Sheesh...

Great post!

Sheila

I think they are officially brain-dead.

Thanks for commenting!

In order for 'the system of deterrence'

to work, you actually have to have each side believing that the other sides will use the nukes. The Soviets knew that the U.S. would back in the day, and MAD seems to have worked as a result.

Listen to the Dems, the left, the MSM, etc. these days. What kind of impression does that leave you with respect to how likely the U.S. would be to use nuclear weapons and under what conditions. Now think how that sounds to other countries, especially those based on the respect for power and might like those in the Middle East.

Could you imagine what would happen to any Republican president ordering the use of nuclear weapons for any reason? Just look at what happens when you order a paltry 20,000 extra troops overseas. Do you think that this might not affect a President's decision to use the nuclear option?

Can you actually see any Dem president ordering there use under pretty much any circumstance? Do you suppose there were any particular reasons why the USSR folded under Reagan's watch and not Carter's, and do you think it would have happened under Clinton?

I for one am not particularly optimistic with respect to the answers to any of these questions.

philosophocon

You bring up an excellent point- without the threat of retaliation, even a rational person might be willing to use nukes.

However, an irrational person will not even be deterred by MAD. An example is Hitler who was more than willing to see Germany burn because they had not been worthy enough to triumph.

And a nuclear Iran will dominate the Middle East and its oil, and that is something we cannot allow.

Why...

...do we continue to assume rationality where no rationality exists?

Hey, don't get bogged down. I need something to read.

I'd like to second

the Interface's comment.

To assume a rational actor despite all evidence to the contrary is not just stupid, it is dangerous.
