Comment on: The Proud Liberal

Contradictions of "Personal Responsibility"

You Do Choose

You choose to act with integrity and honor or to act dishonestly and in a low fashion. Right and wrong. Thats the choice that we have to make all the time, every day. None of us choose well all the time but a successful life is strictly a matter of choice, there are many 'successful' people with rotten souls.

Well Said skep41

Whether you are a Liberal or a Conservative the choices we make will determine our success or failure. Making excuses for our failures without examining our choices is simply a cop out

Redneck & skep41

Your opinions are still declarations of a theory of cause and effect. The fact is that your theories are incorrect. Your choices will not determine your success or failure. The world does not have an active law that sees to it that good choices result in success and bad choices result in failure.

You on crack, boy?

Just wondering...

You might do well reading some of the great philosophers, even the Bible!

Why are you guys debating ?

He's a liberal.

Nothing is his fault.

If your fat it's not your fault - blame butter.

If you smoke and get lung cancer - blame 'Big Tobacco'.

If you buy more house than you can afford - blame manipulative lenders.

See how there are no consequences to bad choices?

Of course with the three examples I just gave I disprove your entire point, but still make it perhaps?

It's easy for a lib to make excuses for "making good choices." If a person doesn't, and bad things befall them, they can blame someone else, some other nebulous nothingness. Anything but themselves. It's not their fault they screwed up their life you see.

Pretzeling ones self into thinking there is no such thing as personal responsibility absolves one from life, from morality - from ANY responsibility, personal or otherwise. Since nothing is set, who's to say who's right or wrong?

It's liberal relativism. Plain and simple.

proud idiot?

are you kidding me right now? Of course there are classes in america. did you miss the point, the American dream? Work hard make the right choices care about your neighbor and you can achieve your goals!!! socialism and communism do not work. it denies the human spirit of drive and individualism If we were all supposed to be the same, God wouldn't have created different languages, different eye, hair and skin color. we would all have the same intelligence and humor and creativeness. God is perfect and therefore we have choices, chances to make ourselves better and challenges to overcome. Without this the growth of spirit and integrity would never occur.Life would have no meaning. Do you really have such lack of faith and confidence that you would promote this idea?i feel so sorry for your limited and uninspired view .Your entire life must be a complete let down and bummer.you poor.poor thing, lackingnwealth of faith. hope and wisdom.
fyi we are not all alike. fyi love your neighbor as thyself and discover something different that you like about yoursel and use it to inspire. Democrats negative down depressing disbelievers bad deal.take a look at the bRIGHTside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God did not create different languages, etc. Even if you believe in the creation story it's reasonable to see that mankind moved out from a center of creation on journeys that led them to different parts of the globe over thousands of years. Different languages sprung from not being connected with one another, as did different cultures and societies.

As far as I know the creation story didn't say that God gave Adam and Eve knowledge of how to build wheels, how to get a fire and all the other things that humans had to learn about the earth and our relation to it.

You attribute things to God that are not necessary. Simply coping with life on earth presents lots of problems. But that's the nature of earth and humans. God is redundant, not necessary.

to the un american communist stooge

I AM SHOCKED THAT YOU DIDNT MOVE TO CUBA YET WITH THE NEW LIBERTIES. LIKE DARWIN ONLY THE
SMARTEST AND FITTEST SURVIVE YOU COMMUNISTS FASCISTS REWRITE HISTORY AND BEING THE UNEDECUCATED PSEUDOINTELLECTUAL IDIOT YOUI ARE CAN NOT APPLY THE FACTS IN A FAIR AND BALANCED FASHION.YOU ARE TRUELY STUPID AND JEALOUS OF PEOPLE WHO DID FAR BETTER THAN YOU IN SCHOOL,TESTS, ETC. GET A LIFE AND DO US ALL A FAVOR AND LEAVE THE COUNTRY

Again, your premise is completely wrong

To evoke the doctrine of personal responsibility is to declare that “exercising personal responsibility will cause you to be more successful than you would otherwise be and will not unjustly impose the costs of your irresponsible behavior upon others." There is no guarantee of success; there is no assurance of outcome. There is no consideration of matters of birth, physical capabilities, etc. THESE ISSUES ARE COMPLETELEY IRRELEVANT. The initial circumstances of one’s birth PRECEDES opportunity. In a just society, “equal opportunity” means that the state places no ADDITIONAL obstacles in the way of its citizenry except inasmuch as the citizen’s behavior (physical attacks upon others, for example) warrants such disparate treatment.

Neither “personal responsibility” nor “equal opportunity” have EVER involved any obligation or right related to positive intervention by ANYONE to improve the outcomes of those who might otherwise fail. We are not the cause of many things that happen to us, but not only is it not even remotely the province of government to attempt to address those initial disparities, the ability of the individual to determine his own destiny vastly exceeds the absurd 10% assertion. Certainly, inherent intellectual ability, gives one a step up, but there are MENSA members from all walks of life and all economic circumstances.

But the biggest absurdity is that competition yields a few winners and a whole bunch of losers. Quite the contrary, economic competition is not like warfare where the enemy is defeated (they are merely employed elsewhere). The competition is to be the best at meeting the needs of the rest of society, so the winner of that competition yields FAR greater numbers of winners who can take advantage of that better service, more abundant production, lower price, better quality, etc. This has been the engine that has driven human prosperity more than anything else in the last three centuries.
