Experience Counts?

As an engineer, I

applaud your formulations. The thesis and hypotheses seem sound, and I concur in your conclusion.

It's another absolute non-issue being used to muddy the waters and deflect attention away from real issues... or the lack thereof.

Brian, I agree..

All of the media hype is just distracting from the very serious issues that should be front and center during any election cycle.

Both parties are happy to have these non-issues push the sticky ones to the rear of the line. I fear once again the electorate is being played like a Stradivarius.

Sarge

Having NO abilities in math WHAT SO EVER, I tried to use geometric logice to deduce the correctness of your esteemed calculations which are truly inventive and conclude you are probably right....I think.

Sgt.Relic

The only part of the equation you missed is (M-O)Allow me to translate M=media O=objectivity. Since (M-O)= BS,the T=T,and P=P must be recalculated. Good post, however.

Seems like pi ought to fit in there

somewhere, but I don't know where.

Kev

The idea for this essay stems from a book I recently purchased. It is titled Physics for Future Presidents by Richard A. Muller, Professor of Physics at UC Berkeley.

In his introduction Muller refers to the physics teachers bailout procedure: "Here let me show you an equation that you can't possibly understand, and then you won't blame me for my poor teaching".

I learned it as; "If you can't dazzle the with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t" and it didn't require a PhD.

clyde

HaHaHa! I guess I should have stipulated to the M factor. The media is a constant. 100% left wing. If you plug objectivity into the equation the whole thing blows up just like global warming models. LOL!

wil

That was another tricky part of the equation. I didn't know how many of the candidates actually like pie.

Well,

Since the Senators have the Power of Bill Submittal, so that P of S = BS
And Governors have the power over the state Guard, Disaster relieve, and Orchestrate the state agenda, so that P of G = G O D,
T of OB < < < T of MP

What he said

As an english lit major I certainly am unable to argue with you, Sgt.

I think it was Fred or Newt who said that on her first day in the Gov chair, Sarah had more executive experience than the whole Dem/lib ticket. haha. On her second day she had twice as much. pretty funny lines.

I do know that

getting kicked in the nads = two acres...

Red

There is plenty of BS in DC, that's for sure. I wasn't going for a unified field theory so many important factors were omitted. HaHa!

SP

I caught much the same explanation from Rudy on
Sunday. He was the only one to include McCain in the scenario.

His point being that senators don't veto legislation, operate with a budget, and oversee the administration of multiple functional areas. His perspective is that of a mayor of course, which explains his position, but it's not one I would argue against.

SP

HaHaHa! No argument on the nad equation! Experience is always the best teacher.

(laughing hysterically)

okay, so, it's lucky we didn't pick romney or a fred thompson for veep with that equation!

sarge, all leftie reporters are going to have to... STAY AFTER CLASS on this one.

guaranteed.

BG

I'm starting to get a little weary of this constant drumbeat.

Is it just me or is this media cacophony just drowning out any talk about substantive issues?

Notice how everytime Obama lays low his poll numbers go up.

no, you're right

just my opinion, though, for what it's worth. saying the media is in obama's back pocket is putting it mildly. he sits back, shuts up, and they put it the fourth estate flank of his campaign into overdrive. (see US magazine)

getting a little off the subject, did you see thompson last night? that guy's great!

Sarge

The difference in quantification of the two ciphers is determined alone by the ever-fluctuating 10%-20% of uncommitted, non-partisan, uneducated voters

wil

Pi is in the equation. How much pi can you give to the masses.

BG

I did catch part of Thompson's speech and it reminded me of why I backed him in the primaries. I'm only sorry he didn't give a speech on his own behalf that was as well crafted.

Palin gave a good speech last night which should serve to calm down the press.

On a disturbing note, did you catch the crawler on fox during her post speech? It said her position on climate change was that it posed a threat. Not what I wanted to hear.

unc

Ah! The big squishy middle! The nirvana of politics. A place where no one is criticized for knowing absolutely nothing about the issues and being driven strictly by emotions and TV ads.

The importance of Pi to the people can't be discounted. There was at one time an Ice Cream Party here at TH but I fear they have gone the way of the Whigs.

BG

I thought that was supposed to be cake? Also, that particular campaign tactic didn't work out very well for Marie.

you know, sarge,

i know she supports drilling in that off-limits protected region in alaska (ANWR, right?). i didn't hear anything about climate change last night, but, to my knowledge, i think she does NOT believe in man-made global warming.

as for fred thompson, i adore that guy. he's brilliant. i liked him during the primaries, too, but huckabee had already kind of taken over by the time he arrived big on the scene.

(i know what you mean about the pi. don't worry, i've already been decapitated by liberals to the fullest extent possible...)

oh well

at least no one will ever be able to accuse me of being a talking head.

Sarah just erased the blackboard, Sgt;)

Man did she romp 'em and stomp 'em last night or what? Imagine if we had TWO cons on the ticket?

Buck

Good observation. HaHaHa! Best comment so far. I figure if Gore can make a fortune with junk science then junk math may be the future. LOL!

BG

I found this link that clarifies Palin's positions in a rough sketch so of way:

http://www.issues2000.org/Sarah_Palin.htm

No position on immigration, but I liked most all of what I found. Your take about her position on climate change can be found there also.

Ole' Fred. I really like the guy, and if he was at the top of ticket they couldn't keep me out the voting booth if they carpeted the floors in landmines. He should have gotten in on July 4th like all his supporters urged him to do. But....coulda' woulda' shoulda' and blah blah blah.

BTW, BG

I wouldn't give up on the talking head gig too quickly.

With hurricanes jockeying for position in the Atlantic the weather idiots are going to wear out the current crop of banal commenters in short order. LOL!

SP

Yes, I may have to recalculate. She delivered a good speech. Albeit, to an audience that was there to cheer at the drop of a hat. She should play well in small town America.

I liked Guiliani's speech also.

Well, talk was that McCain wanted a democrat on the ticket. He got his wish but I doubt that he expected to be that democrat. The next week or two will tell the tale once Palin has to get on the stump.

I'm looking forward to the Biden debate. That should be priceless.

SC

No contest there. I'm hoping for some really over the top condescension from Biden.

shining city

biden for lunch would make anyone puke.

BG, Brian

BG - I would be very pleased to see his hair plugs fall out on national tv. I just want to hear him say something like "Now, sweetie". I know that "girlie" would be too much to ask for but he can get close.

Brian - coming over.

sarge

sweetheart.

cupcake.

oh, you beautiful doll, you great, big, beautiful doll?

Okay, Sarge

I think we need to start a club.

It will be the
]
"Official Chicken Little Club"

Ane when this "Global Warming" Bullshidt is exposed for trh scam it is we can produce ALL the politicians who went for it....

BG

My money is on Joe. If anybody can say the wrong thing, at the wrong time, it will Biden.

Buck

I'm in.

My son had the money quote on the recent spate of hurricanes and their hypesters, the media. He called them "Chicken Little on Crack".

Speaking of hurricanes. Time me to lash down and trice up. Hannah is coming to call today. I don't expect much from it but wind and rain

When have elections centered on issues?

I agree with the call that Sarge and others have made for a more substantive discussion of issues in the election, but I'm wondering if we've really had such a better substantive campaign in my lifetime (I have a faint memory of Nixon resigning, and being angry that whatever regular programming I wanted to watch was preempted just because of the stupid president, and Reagan '84 was the first national election in which I was eligible to vote).

Seems to me that with more and more media outlets demanding to be fed, and all of them vying for attention/ratings/money, that there's not much hope for substance over hype. I don't know if there is a book or article somewhere that breaks down national elections over the last, say, 50 to 75 years to see if what changes there may have been in the substance vs. fluff discussions and coverage, but it would be interesting to see them compared and analyzed.

Ed

Your concerns are well founded. I was fortunate enough to cut my baby teeth on the Goldwater campaign before heading off to boot camp in '64. Here is a link to Goldwater's acceptance speech that year. http://www.nationalcenter.org/Goldwater.html

His stump speeches were more elaborate and detailed but his acceptance speech will give you a good idea of whether he addressed issues.

Compare it to what you heard last Thursday and ask yourself the same questions you just raised. I think you'll be surprised how much has changed in presidential rhetoric.

BTW, this speech, which I had read after the fact, my drill instructors having other plans for my time, defined me politically for life.

I would be happy to hear your thoughts on it.

Also, Interface wrote a lengthy review of Neil Postman's book about the effect of show business on politics. It's long so I printed it out but it was well done.

Postman argues that it is "Brave New World" not "1984" that was the correct prediction. Huxley was right, Orwell was wrong.

Here's a link http://theinterface.blogtownhall.com/default.aspx

Sarge - thanks for the tips

and links on the articles. I'll have to check them out and ruminate.

I'd been thinking about your post while taking my youngest to get a haircut, and wondering about the stories I've heard about 1960 being a turning point due to the rise of television and the difference in reaction to the Nixon-Kennedy debate between those who watched on TV and those who listened on the radio. I'll be curious to read the Goldwater link you sent with that in mind.

Yo Sarge! One Vet

to another! Jonah Goldberg wrote
"A hybrid of myth and deceit peddled by the chattering bandersnatches of the Democratic Party's backup communications offices at MSNBC and other press-release transmission belts of the Obama campaign, the whole pseudo-story was surely the brightest flare in the bonfire of asininity in St. Paul this week".

Libs doing what they do best.

"One partial explanation for the feeding frenzy is the bowel-stewing fear among an Obamaphilic press corps that Palin might actually help McCain win."

What's sad about this is that there are some of our misguided conservative bretheren trying to sabotage a possible victory by Palin/McCain by helping the MSM dig up this dirt to smear Sarah. :-(

Turning our country over to a bunch of Marxist/Socialists for 4, maybe 8, years to punish the Republicans is beyond my pay grade to understand.

Hepp our misguided conservative bretheren Jon Cary! Dey iss sufferin' from McCain Derangement Syndrome.

Ed

I remember the early days of TV and politics. My first recollection, I believe, was the 1952 or 56 democratic convention. I was mightily bored but we had one TV and one channel.

That convention had a number of candidates vying for the nomination and all I really remember was the so-called "spontaneous" demonstrations as a bunch of grownups paraded around in funny hats waving placards at the drop their candidates name.

The Nixon/Kennedy debates I remember much better. Nixon didn't play well on the tube but he never had, he looked weird on TV even before the debates. Kennedy was young and had good hair and gave birth to the term TQ as political operatives realized the value of television.

Kennedy came to our area that year and I stood with some people on his motorcade route to get a look at him. It was freezing but as he passed our tiny clump of kids, and one very angry minister, he got up on the back of the convertible and waved. It was quite an experience and coupled with his win probably started me toward becoming a political junkie.

By 1964 I was actually paying attention to what they were saying but with military service, Vietnam and the aftermath I didn't get involved until '72.

There is no doubt in my mind that TV changed the politcal debate but I wouldn't argue that it was an improvement.

willibeaux

I'm always happy to chat with another vet.

Goldberg has a real flare doesn't he? I have no more understanding of how a so-called conservative would help the left to dig up dirt on the republican ticket than I do of why a so-called conservative would author legislation with such obvious back actors as Kennedy, Feingold, Lautenberg and Lieberman. Or Amnesty, campaign reform, gun show control, carbon cap and trade.

I don't think that I am suffering McCain Derangement Syndrome. My problems with the McCain nomination are based far more substantive issues than some mere dislike.

I fight the left because they want to destroy American sovereignty, tax me for carbon, restrict my 2nd amendment rights and limit my free speech.

Oddly, those are the issues covered by the legislation co-authored by the above mentioned democrats with McCain. Do you begin to see my problem?

My conscience tells me not to validate bad behavior with my vote. This is the reason I don't vote for democrats but my vote for McCain will do exactly the same thing but make me equally guilty.

I understand that republicans are happy with his VP pick and so am I. That still doesn't erase all of the backstabbing and pulling the rug out from under conservatives in congress.

Reagan got democrats to cross the aisle to help him. McCain joins the democrats to defeat his own party. I won't to be a party to it. I know that is not a popular opinion around here all of a sudden but I fear I'm stuck with it.

Willi cont....

I am starting to see what McCain meant by it being tough being a maverick but I too have fought tough battles before and have the scars to prove it. I'll survive it.

Make no mistake. I am not suggesting that you are wrong to vote as you expressed and I allow that you may be absolutely right and I will be the first to admit it if that proves to be the case.

I just don't see how we can defeat liberalism in this country by becoming more liberal ourselves. Thanks for the good comment and stop by anytime.

Semper Fi!

Semper Fi!

sarge, i've been mouthing off a lot of

late with enthusiasm for mccain. i know you don't care too much for this guy, and i know you've fought battles of your own, and i hope that you never feel like you're never being, i don't know, picked at, (or whatever) just because you don't want to, or won't, vote for the guy. i'll tell you, from the looks of a lot of blogs, i'm sure you know you're not alone. that's a good thing.

i live in chicago. i'm sure you can understand the unbearable pressure on me to vote now for the big, dual "O." i remember an election in this city where anyone who didn't vote for the mayor was (basically) being branded as a member of the KKK. undoubtedly, many of those voting against him were no better, but you can't apply that to all.

so i'm just saying, you know, it's admirable to do what you think is right (and apologies to all for getting in the middle of this semper fi thing b/c i don't even know what "semper fi" is)...

(but getting off subject, did you hear mort kondracke call poor sarah palin a wacko right-winger on fox news today?)

BG

Your a very sweet lady, BG.

I assure you that no offense is taken on my part by your obvious enthusiasm. Given the right circumstances I too would be beating the drum for my candidate. I'm a bit of an old dog and rest assured I've got a thick skin when it comes to politics.

The Semper Fi! tag is the motto of the USMC generally accepted to mean "Always Faithful" and is used by Marines and former Marines to other Marines signifying solidarity. Occasionally I also use it to recognize a fellow vet, regardless of branch, as a compliment.

It also highlights one of the glaring problems I have had with McCain for years. His idea of compromise is to join democrats. People can call it maverick or whatever label they choose, but to me maverick means someone that can't be trusted to be there when the going gets tough.

Obama is a Marxist ideologue but I always know where he stands even though I totally disagree with him. He is the enemy that I understand. With McCain I have no idea from one day to the next.

For me this election has come down to a question of trust. I know McCain endured a lot as a POW and I cast no aspersions on his service in Vietnam.

But, when I look at the 2008 version of McCain and ask myself the age old grunt question: Would I share a foxhole with this guy? You wouldn't like the answer I come up with.

Sarge

I just posted a new essay, discussing McLiberal's latest.... announcement.

thanks a bunch, sarge

and thanks for telling me what "semper fi" means, especially. i've heard the term before, and i've seen it before, too. but after all these years, i still have never known what it meant.

two more months of watching this stuff. well, the debates will be interesting (and you absolutely KNOW biden's going to say something INCREDILY stupid)... i plan on tuning in to the debates to see the nature of the stupid thing(s)he says. i agree, it might be something sexist, but he's such an idiot, and there'll be so many topics being discussed, well, who knows? also will watch pres debates to see how obama copes w/o the teleprompter... God, i'm going to go watch a movie. i'm sick of watching all this wackiness...

BG

Nearly two years of campaign stretches the limits of endurance for anyone. Many of the THer's here have stood down for a while, including yours truly. The constant highs and lows of a campaign season are hard on the emotions.

I too am looking forward to the debates. And, I agree that the VP debates have the highest potential for entertainment value with Biden involved.

Enjoy your movie.

BINGO!!

my God, sarge, it didn't even take until the debates for you to win on Biden Bingo!!!

Sarge

Having way too many engineers as significant others and friends, I laughed heartily at your synopsis!

The real crux of the matter is let them answer questions head-on without any preparation. Obamama will run from that as fast as he can!

New post on my site.

holy smoke! you hit the jackpot!

“But you know … you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You know, you can … wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it’s still going to stink after eight years.”

they're saying obama was talking about palin b/c of the lipstick?

biden's got him doing the same thing, oh, so low, oh joe, obiden...

Sarge

Another aspect of the topic du jour up at my place.

BG

That was too easy. And, it looks like two'fer. They are a real pair of first class idiots.

str8 talk

You can't argue with the math. I factor anything for stupid so it may not be as valid as before. Pigs and fish! Did the messiah forget he's running against McCain?

Weak argument

You forgot:

C- cares about the Children

R- redistributes income

L- the lipstick factor

G- cares about Global Warming

I- Biden is a total idiot

BHO+ - So is obama

Skep

Do you see the problem inherent to starting with the conclusion and working backward to the equation. Peer review comes along and pokes holes in your argument. HaHaHa!
