United?
In a perfect world we would have the perfect candidate...
These discussions are good because they show we aren't a "march-in-lock-step" party.
In the end, when all is said and done, and we're looking down the barrel of the gun, so to speak, of the war on terror, if the decision is to leave it in the hands of a cut and runner, the republicans will do the right thing!
Gutsy post!

Sheila,
Thank you.
And well, I was a bit hesitant about it. Hence the title...
But this is no perfect world. So we must settle for a 'less than perfect' candidate. How many of those will there be?
As for the rest, I really do want to believe you're right. I'm just worried that THIS Republican might do the wrong thing.
Thanks for the visit!!

We must be united in the end
We know one thing. Hillary will run. So, we have to have a candidate that can beat her. Keeping the Clintons out of another 8 year presidency has to top everything else. I'll give up some of the things I want, and support the person who can beat Hillary. Who is that person? So far according to the polls, Giuliani or McCain.

It's still two years out, so there is still some time.
Let's wait & see what happens in Rhode Island, if the RHINO goes down to a conservative it could be a big boost.
At this time I like Rudy more even though he's soft on social issues.
Also with a Republican in there we have a chance they will listen, but if the left liberals get in forget it they have their own agenda [and it's not ours].

Sandra,
Well, if it comes down to choosing between Guiliani and McCain, I have to go with Giuliani.
When I first came here I was a big Giuliani fan. But as I read (and looked up) some of the things I heard about him here, well, let's just say my boat has been rocked.
As I've said many times, I love Townhall. I'm learning a great deal from all of you here.
And that is why I posted this. Despite some trepidation.
Oh God, I just hope Jimmy Carter is in a good mood today!! ;o)
Thanks for the great comment!! And of course your visit!!!

But whatever the outcome, as long as it's NOT a communist (I mean demonrat) then I won't shoot myself.
Great comment!!! Thanks for visiting!

A Poll
A poll would be interesting. May someone with a high traffic blog could set up a post asking people to provide a one word comment, naming their candidate of preference. The owner of this blog could tally the results.
Limits: Not even close to scientific and the blog owner would be on the honor system for reporting accurate results.
Positives: Even not being a scientific poll a winner would give everyone a "clearer" picture of who might come closer to winning the conservative base. (MAYBE...giving conservatives someone to rally around)

It would be interesting to see the results. As for the honor system, there are guys here that I would have no problem trusting to this.
It's Townhall, remember!! ;o) No moonbats here.
Now a poll, well, that was just the first thing that came to mind. There might be a better way. I don't know. But someone may come up with something.

A couple of words..
...I don't think there is "dissention in the ranks." When the stakes get this high, the more passionate people become about their ideas and the harder they fight for them.
"And this comes at a really bad time. We have the liberal sociopaths (oops, I mean socialists) on the defensive. If not on the run. They’ve messed up big-time lately and I think that if we make some decisive moves, we can make up a great deal of what has been lost over the past 40 years. Not to mention the new ground to be gained and the guarantee of no further major damage from the leftistas."
Spoken like a true politician (just insert "right" and it sounds exactly the same).
Your idea about taking a poll and vote en masse regardless of the outcome is to put it simply: ? I could not find the word.
"How can we demand that our leaders reach a consensus when we ourselves cannot?"
I think you underestimate people's passion about politics. Noone I know of expects consensus among their elected leaders. I think when people vote, they generally vote one's closest to themselves and noone wants to lose or compromise their principles.
They way I see it; every senetor, every governor, every ex-whatever is a front runner until this time next year.A year following this election, who ever decides to run will be running against the failures or successes of this next legislature.
What's the deal with the "good mood" comment?

The good mood comment is just this. Whatever holes in my argument, or whatever weaknesses in my stance, I knew you would find them. I've seen you work. You have a way of cutting through to the quick. And quick.
I've seen too, how you can tear down a weak argument in a heartbeat. And I respect you for it.
The comment just means that whatever your opinion, (and I always welcome your opinion, whether you agree with me or not) that you would be gentle with me.
And I surely meant no offense.

I agree, I don't see it as "dissention in the ranks". We will all decide which candidate is the best in our opinion, and we'll go to the polls! That's what our country is all about!

Hey RightWing...
...I can't be offended. I've got a sense of humor, I got it as soon as I read it. I was being facetious.
This next next election I believe will be the trend setter, but I practice optimism. Optimism trumps pessimism everytime.
Which mental attitude do you think He would want us to have? The more optimistic you are the closer to Him you are, and the more pessimistic the further away. That's what President Ranoldus Magnus had!
Keep posting your pithy questions and observations. They do our school a valuable service, like all our other classmates.

To answer your question:
RightWing, if that is your real name, I do know this:
A) I don't think anyone has ever changed their mind by reading a bumpersticker.
B) I don't think anyone has ever changed their views by reading those of their peers.
C) I think the vast majority of people who will participate in the upcoming election already have their minds made up.
Your greatest sphere of influence are of those you come in contact with personally; your family, friends, coworkers.....marches, demonstrations, chants, slogans do not work. They only embolden the opposition.
My most effective ways of infuencing my orb consist of:
1) Never tell someone they are wrong. Someone who is told they are wrong feels attacked personally and will defend themselves possibly to the death because at the time they believe it is themselves being attacked, not their ideas.
2) Have a foundation on which to stand and be consistent. I have friends and family who can tell me my side of an dispute before I do and wind up arguing with themselves for me and I win everytime.
You're off to a great start because of your interest and enthusiasm about the subject.
The only examples I know of someone being instantly convinced by someone else is when that person believed THAT someone else was greater than themselves.

All kidding aside. I think the path to 9-11 was an unbelievably successful representation of what we face in this country, and how now more than ever we must be united in our cause against these fanatics who would destroy civilization, and our way of life.
This is tryly a battle of good vs evil. I'm hoping resonable democrats understand the stakes.

Choices
Living on the sandbar known as LI (Lon Guylan) as the locals say, I have a good perspective of Guilliani. Most of you know him from his work during the 9/11 attack, but he was a great Mayor way before that, and a tough prosecuting AG prior to becoming Mayor of NYC. Yes he leans towards the left on some social issues, abortion being one of them. However he is very tough on crime, very pro-military and more importantly very much the fiscal conservative. Ruddy would make a wonderful candidtate. As Mayor of NYC he basically cleaned up the mess from the former occupant of Gracie Mansion, one Mayor Dinkins, whose policies led NYC, down the path to misery. Ruddy came in and basically cut taxes, made Times Square, which had become a squalid center of porn and prostitution, in a business-corprate zone, and really turned things around. Many of the jobs that were created during his tenure as Mayor can be indirectly linked to his vision.
Also I am looking into Mitt Romney, I have read some of his statements and others about him. He could be a good candidate as well.
Such are my thoughts
btw thanks RWK for your nice coments of me. I don't know how it is I inspired you, but I see, it was certainly fruitful.

Ruddy also helped to bring about the transformation of Harlem into a business friendly-economic zone as well. So all the while the racebaiters were playing the race card, Ruddy was transforming the city into a place where all NYkrs could realize their dreams.
