Comment on: Tampa Bay Pro Life for Mike Huckabee

Letter to Governor Huckabee

My response

Mr. Mahurin,
While I can see your motivations in supporting Mike Huckabee, I must respectfully disagree. He is adamantly pro-life, which is key. But he takes borderline dangerous views, in my opinion, on many key issues, and some not so key.

1. I completely disagree with his pre-occupation with the public school system. He is very enthusiastic about raising teachers salaries, and hiring more teachers. This is putting band-aids on a problem, at the expense of American taxpayers.

2. Immigration. I don’t think this is an issue for us to compromise on, contrary to Mr. Huckabee’s view, among other prominent Republicans. We can’t allow illegal immigrants to apologize, pay a fee, and get off scotch free. Especially when Americans are shelling out money right and left for their children to be educated, for their hospital bills, etc.

3. Nationwide smoking ban? I hate smoking. This idea drips of idealism, but not only that, of a deeper seeded issue. I am a big proponent of state’s rights, and the idea that a smoking ban could be a federal issue seems to be indicative of a lack of respect for this concept. It may seem trivial, but I view it as the tip of an ice-burg. We do not need another Republican who makes the federal government even more of a nanny state. Conservatives should immediately cringe at the thought of any more federal regulation.

Continued due to pesky word limit

4. He said in May that he’d be willing to change the rule barring immigrants from running for president. This, like the smoking ban, may seem trivial. But it seems unpatriotic to allow a foreigner to take the highest position in our country, even if they’ve been raised here since birth. That’s the best-case scenario. If they haven’t, the risk of them being biased towards their home country (which would not be unwarranted… everyone is patriotic about their roots) could affect our homeland security. It is a slippery slope.

5. While in Arkansas as Governor the state spending increased by roughly 60%...twice the increase of inflation. While increases in spending are a part of life, this seems a much too significant increase for an eight-year period under a “conservative” governor.

6. While Governor he appointed what Arkansas conservatives described as all liberal judges. With so many potential Supreme Court Justice nominations this next Presidential term that would be a devastating thing to carry over to the office of Commander in Chief.

This is a pretty thought-provoking article too:

Letter to Governor Huckabee

You see, on Mother's Day 2007, my pastor, Jerry Cisar, preached a remarkable sermon on the horrific practice of abortion. He does not usually preach topically, so this was a bit of an event in itself. He described the issue in clear terms and in ways which I became freshly convicted. The facts were not new, but the sense of needing to do something was definitely new.The partial birth abortion ban was upheld by the Supreme Court this spring. Medical science and technology are on our side in this fight. And fight we must.
