Computer games: a harmless sport...or evil deceptive device?

Addiction

The request for 30 minutes a day is certainly reasonable. However, the reality is that 30 minutes becomes a "teaser" which leads immediately to requests for "just a little more time to level up" or, worse yet, requests for money to buy game items.

The cure for addiction, according to Alcoholics Anonymous, is total avoidance of alcohol. The same may be true for electronic addiction.

The Boy Scouts forbid electronics at council summer camps. The effect on behavior of a week completely devoid of electronics is observable, not only in you but the other boys as well. It also coincides with my own experience of spending a year in Thailand, almost totally cutoff from access to English media. The result was an altered state of mind that seems preferable, in retrospect, to the state of mind created by electronic media saturation.

Your experiences are necessarily different from mine, or anyone for that matter, only a few years older. My plea, the same as every parent, is for you to relive, however briefly, the old way of experiencing the world, so that you might carry forward whatever of value you find there as you plunge headlong into the new.
