Detroit area

Well, that means the neighborhood is either quite dark or you hear the calls to prayer from a mosque 5 times a day.

And You Need...

an AK47 and mucho ammo to live there.

But $1.00!!!!!!!!!!!

GG

I saw that picture, G., and I wondered how much it would cost to make it habitable, also.
And build walls, and install security, of course!

Home for $1

I loved the line in the article, "The agent did say that the buyer agreed to pay the full list price of $1, and planned to pay cash." Would that be a in a bill or change?

I was in Detroit about 15 years ago. The place is horrific as you drive in mile after mile. The traffic grid is based on circles so as you go in you pass 12 mile, 11 mile, etc. It finally looks like a respectable, attractive city at about the 1.5 mile marker. The very downtown is nice as any other place but coming in is awful.

You'd have to clean out the syringes...

crack vials and used condoms first. Then install the window bars. You know, the white flight that started in the 60's has pushed the edges of the metro /bedroom community boundries all the way out to Brighton. Check that on the google map. Classic White Flight.

I would say...

I would say that the real estate in Detroit has retarded a little, but that would be unPC, and CASH has officially come out against the term.

Stop by for your CASH update!

A House For A Buck!

And they'll throw in a great Governor, two fabulous Senators, a raft of left-wing Congressmen and legislators and a Prize-winning mayor FOR FREE!
I'm packing now...

With

all the money saved on the pruchase, Russian Mafia guards should be affordable.

Not Even For A Dollar!!!!!

Nope.

Gray Ghost

Heck, you buy up enough of them, tear them down, and VOILA! Urban Ranching! I swear you could farm along some of the major surface streets in that mess. A friend of wife's and her husband had come to visit,he had not been to Detroit before, his comment was "What country bombed your city"? 'nuff said.

Clyde has it right...

...demolish the structures, haul the debris away. Then collect farm subsidies. Or better yet, grow corn. Its up to $6. per bushel or darn close.

Gray Ghost

$ 1.00. Must be a real fixer-upper. How is McDonald's Iced Tea anyway?

emjayne

I design commercial and industrial renovations all the time. If we assume the house is 1500 sq. feet and a renovation cost of approx. $75.00 per sq. foot, if would cost $112500.

Sue

Probably change. Maybe even pennies.

Thanks for stopping by.

Having just got back from Houston, I know what you mean. There are places that look like Harlem (i.e., Spanish Harlem) as you get towards the center of Houston.

I guess all large cities are the same.

davecatbone

Houston is the same way. 40 miles out you start getting into Houston. So are Memphis and Jackson, MS.

Redhead

I will come by, retarded or not (Ha!) to get my CASH update.

skep41

Since I am a Mississippian, I have to wonder, if the "left-wing" politicians had anything to do with the cost of the house.

boaz

Russian Mafia Guards?

I want US Marines or Rangers.

Buck

You and I agree! Not even for a dollar.

clyde

Urban Ranching!

But would the zoning laws allow it?

DD

Urban Farming!

I believe the zoning laws would allow it!

MJSJR

For $1.00 for a large glass of iced tea, and on a hot day (100 degrees +), it is awfully good.

Baltimore

Baltimore did this in the 1980's, sold off condemned houses in some areas for a dollar. I can't name one neighborhood where this worked.

The only urban renewal which really worked was in Otterbein, where they cleared out the entire neighborhood and renovated everything, at the same time putting in parks which effectively cut off all but a few through roads from the surrounding neighborhoods.

All other attempts at neighborhood redevelopment either failed entirely, or, like Bolton Hill, saw a cycle of expensive development, followed by rising crime, a drop in property values, resident flight, and then a new development cycle a few years later.

Considering Detroit's record is about as Baltimore's in terms of crime and political corruption, I think I will invest my dollar in something more dependable, like a lottery ticket.

Andrews

What you wrote about Baltimoreis extremely interesting. Memphis and Jackson, MS tried the same thing in the 1980's. As in Baltimore, the results were less than desired.

Where is Otterbein?
