I don't know if you stumbled across my writing on the way our worship of youth has led to the collapse of standards, but I think your analogy fits that perfectly.

My argument is basically that in the past youth rebelled, sowed their oats, then assumed adult roles, and the old standards were preserved. generation after generation, youths rebelled against the same rules.
Now we worship youth, and supposed adults adopt the standards of the youth as their own. So when the youth rebel, the adults follow their lead, meaning the rules against which the next generation rebels is more lax, making their behavior ever more extreme.
