Why I am a Conservative

God Save the Queen

Hey guys, get this - the UK passport is to have references to the Queen removed:

It wouldn't matter so much if the proposed EU constitution was as good as the US constitution.

The EU constitution text is available at this link:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2950276.stm

Here's the preamble:
"DRAWING INSPIRATION from the cultural, religious and humanist inheritance of Europe, from which have developed the universal values of the inviolable and inalienable rights of the human person, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law ..."

Okay ... I'm a human person! That's gratifying to know. Presumably the constitution is made future-proof so that aliens can join the EU.

Here's the start to Article 1-1:
"Reflecting the will of the citizens and States of Europe to build a common future, this
Constitution establishes the European Union, on which the Member States confer competences to
attain objectives they have in common."

It makes my heart soar to realise that my national identity is subsumed to an institution that confers "competences" which attain "objectives"?

What a romantic timeless vision of nationhood.
It's not exactly "We the People ..." is it?

Well said!

Is there a particular reason you are putting the last part in a Greek font? (At least that is what it appears as on my screen.) Those who don't know the Greek alphabet or who can't translate it into another font will not benefit from your words.

Ah, now whatever you did...

...it's no longer Greek to me!

Human Person

Why do they need to say 'human person'? Would not one of those indicate the other? Are there human dogs or snake persons? (OK, maybe there are!) Anyway, seems like silly, redundant rhetoric -- like the other phrase there, "confer competences to attain objectives..." which is just a more confusing way to say, "We will allow other nations of the EU to make our decisions for us."

I really get uncomfortable with the idea of joining with other nations whose votes may outweigh those from my own country, thus changing us for their benefit. I don't like that the United Nations gives weight to votes from tiny, insignificant countries who make decisions affecting the U.S. Who are they to decide?!

As far as why you are a conservative -- I can definitely identify with your points.

The reason liberals call us 'reactionary' is because we have the gall to actually question their elitist wisdom. How dare we not think they have the answers to saving the world!

very good

I especially like these:

"Character matters more than intelligence" - people often neglect character altogether

"People are often naive about other people’s intentions" - nicely understated.
