Nice post. I'll submit the primary reason moderates voted for the unknown was John McCain's foolish decision to suspend his campaign as a "Country First" move and return to DC to help out on the TARP debate in a Congress already suffering from approval ratings in the tiolet. Americans didn't want banks being bailed-out and decided McCain was just going to deliver more of what they despised from this Congress.

I was never a fan of the old goat. He may be of high moral character but thanks to that misguided decision, he handed the White House to an unknown on a silver platter. Par for the course with the GOP the past decade.
