The Pelosi Trap

Oh the irony

I'll be your resident troll, Dan.

The irony in your prescription for electoral success is too delicious to go unmentioned:

You say: "The two areas the GOP must add to their base is the percentage of Hispanic and African-American conservative voters ..."

First, Hispanics: Your (and by your, I mean the GOP's) pathologial obsession with casting every immigrant of Hispanic origin, legal or not (and some not even immigrants!), as criminals and drug dealers leaves you with no hope of capturing them as loyal Republicans. And their performance for Democrats in this election shows that clearly.

The pathetic attempt to make ammends by placing Mel Martinez as figurehead of the RNC totally misunderstands the distinctions Hispanics draw between Cubans and the rest of the community. Likewise, you insult their intelligence with the attempeted misdirection. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

Second, the Black vote: Your party rejoices in the political comeback of segregationist Sen. Trent Lott, who thinks the Dixiecrats had it right, and you expect to pull in new Black voters. I can tell you, no matter how socially conservative they may be, you haven't a prayer of recruiting them when you put guys like that in charge of the place.

Here's a thought: Based on where Democratic pick-ups came, and where GOPers held their own, is it possible your Southern Strategy is working a little too well? With significant losses in the West, moderate losses in the Midwest and Southwest, and the Northeast now turning entirely Blue, it looks like you've become a regional party.

Irony

We agree that Trent Lott is a bad choice, not for the reasons you cite, but because he rambles. He rembles into areas he has no more idea than a chicken what he is talking about. He should be held to the "10 second rule" in his answers in interviews. I'm looking for the transcript or video (to post of his interview w/Blitzer today
