The Presidential Auction

AND WE ARE SOLD FOR A FARTHING

A farthing, for those who don't know and don't want to look it up, was a British coin worth about one-quarter of a penny.

I have asked a question in earlier blog entries and/or comments. That question has to do with the expression "sold down the river." My belief is that "sold down the river" harkens back to the days of slavery, when one or more members of a family of slaves was sold either up the river or down the river, as the case may be, the family forever divided.

Be that historical comparison as it may, it is difficult to disagree with Dr. Heath that (1) our President will be sold to the highest bidder; (2) we are being sold for less than one-quarter of a British farthing, at the then value of such a coin; and (3) we are being sold down the river for such an amount.

It adds up to a rather disagreeable predicament in which to find oneself.

Yesterday (11/13/07) Phyllis Schlafly wrote a column about what the American people want in a President. Everything she wrote was absolutely correct. In my opinion, when we find such a creature, we should look around simultaneously for a unicorn.

There's one candidate who seemingly stands apart from the messy crowd of Presidential hopefuls; that person is Huckabee. However, it is advised to begin a search for a unicorn as well. I for one am not easily swayed by any of the snake-oil hucksters.

Thanks SF; an excellent synopsis of the problem we are facing. And Phyllis is right on target.
