America is world's greatest socialist country

Socialist policies

I would note that it is primarily in the last 70 years or so that America has been going more to the socialist agenda. That also happens to coincide with Democrats in control of Congress during most of that time period. It also coincides with the rise of socialism in Russia after WWI with many people that preferred socialism (communism) changing to the Democrat Party.

socialist policies

I think most people want a better life and empathize that other people want better lives. I think, too, thst most people are not so ideological oriented that they support or reject policies based on labels. The socialist polices in America are really policies that a broad array of Americans want for better lives. Conservatives argue that you aren't entitled to a better life unless it comes through capitalism. I think most people don't care how they get better lives. Whatever works.

Socialism

That is the conundrum. I agree that most people want a better life. I would prefer a country that supports individual responsibility as opposed to government responsibility. I also would prefer to provide support to those that are unable (mentally ill, elderly) to assist themselves but draw the line at a lifetime of assistance to those that are able bodied.

History has shown that no socialist policy is workable. Currently the concept of a republic with the people deciding on their leaders is the latest attempt to control the problems associated with socialism. While it allows the people (socialist concept) to affect the direction of the government, it also keeps in check the totalitarian tendencies of those placed in power.

I wouldn't include the GI Bill in that list but that is my opinion. Unlike other socialized programs like Pell Grants, the GI Bill requires a service to be performed by the recipient so it is more closely associated with payment for services than with welfare.

History

I heard something the otherday (could have been from an historian, maybe not). He said that those who say that history repeats itself so those who don't learn from history are bound to make the same mistakes over and over don't know enough about history to distinguish between similarities.

I think people often pick up a saying and everybody is saying the saying, but it usually, in my estimation, isn't true, just convenient.
