This coming weekend, the PA Ren Faire is hosting a group of wounded Marines from Bethesda. Each one of them is getting a vial of sand from Iwo Jima, supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Crawfish. They're also each getting a pewter eagle claw with a certificate reading, "This Eagle's Claw, symbolizing those with the heart of an Eagle, as found astride the Globe and Anchor, Is given by grateful citizens to symbolize our thanks to those who give so much to our Nation. Welcome Home." They will also be drinking free at the Dockside Bar, getting knighted by Good Queen Bess, getting recognized by numerous stage acts, and will be getting "drive-by wenchings" from the Wenches Guild.

It's apparent that "some" officials don't know (or, more likely, don't care) about the contributions made by the National Guard throughout the 20th Century and into the present day. Not just domestically, but in the actual prosecution of foreign wars.

It's true that, in WWII, the Alaska Scouts and the Eskimo Scouts did not serve beyond the borders of Alaska. It's ALSO true that Alaska was the only part of mainland America to be directly attacked (and invaded!) by a foreign enemy. The Scouts played a vital role in the containment and eventual expulsion of those Japanese troops. They continued to patrol the vast Alaskan outback- a role that continued throughout the Cold War as well, when Alaska was a virtual front line in that silent conflict.

The volunteers of the Alaska NG have served America as few others have in the modern era. Their contribution was every bit as worthy as those draftees who spent WWII "shoveling s**t in Louisiana". I look forward to the day when the Obamanists are relegated to that same obnoxious duty... per court order!
