I have described this in terms far less delicate than "uproar."

It is the Christian Right that is in an uproar. The Christian Right are conservatives of convenience; They are also responsible for choreographing and funding a majority of the homophobia in the US.

The Christian Right has a symbiotic but stressful relationship with the Republican party. The GOP get votes, envelope stuffers and bell ringers. The millionaire leaders of the Christian Right get money, political power and a judge or two.

McCain is trying to maneuver around this byt being a pragmatic panderer. His dance reminds me of three year old who has to pee.
