I remember the movie, "The Great Santini", and understand the relationship your uncle had with your grandfather. I have the same type of relationship with my mother, and although we never came to blows {at least, I never struck her!!;-)}, she must be reminded everyday that I am no longer a child. Like your uncle, when people ask me about her, all that I can speak of are her wonderful qualities, and how much I miss her, living so far from my folks.
Thanks for another great column!

A fine tribute
It's a generational responsibility thing. My son was always saying things like "Grandma's fun, Dad", while all the while I'm thinking, "This is not the woman who raised ME.". The major difference is that I was her responsibility, and he was mine.
Ah! Grandkids, children you can spoil and hand back.

A Grandpa Joe. But he never served. I had seven great uncles who did, though.
He was never a fun Gramps, but I had two. And Grampa Sal was the best at making work fun. He immigrated from Italy and to my knowledge never went to war either.
I hope I am a fun Gram when my turn comes.
