Why Are There Different Versions of the Bible?

King James Forever

The beauty of the language of the King James Bible, the Bible of my youth, will always be the voice of the Bible to me. The spare phrases, stripped of useless adjectives and adverbs have a dynamic power unmatched in any other version. Recently I heard a reading of a 'modernized' 23rd psalm and I felt only sorrow at how weakened and pallid it seemed compared to the raw strength and lyric poetry of King James. Sorry to be so vehement, but every time I hear any reading of these modernized texts my first thought is not the message but how clumsy and banal the prose.

Hi Skep

I entirely understand. I too enjoy the 23rd Psalm . It is my favorite and I have memorized it in King James. My article, of course, was about the academic side of things but I agree with you to some extent about the beauty.

Warmest Regards
