Here in Maine the state collects more gas tax than the feds do from each gal. of gas.
We are used to the concept of bohica.
We have a small population of 1.2 million, have one of the lowest income averages and yet enjoy the highest tax burden in the country.
Those of us who are fighting against this junk are growing in numbers so all is not lost.

You just have to love how the tax revenues go into the General (read: slush) funds where they can get it with out much ado. If the taxes went towards what was originally intended and we had to pay out of pocket at the end of the year instead of having them take it out incrementally, I am sure there would be a few less Liberals out there.

Taxes- federal, state and local- abound on every phase of the energy business... including all facets of the vital and extensive logistics necessary to keep and maintain a rig in the patch. Then there's transportation, refining, retooling, every phase of delivering to the consumer... on and on. Piles of taxes- both overt and hidden.

And, as always, its passed on to the consumer. That means that WE not only pay the federal taxes, but, in essence, a maze of other taxes from places in which we've never set foot! Ain't guvment wunnerful??

That this has only served to depress the industry over the decades and drive small independents out of business (I know about THAT!) doesn't matter to bureaucrats. The taxpayers have infinitely deep pockets. And liberals can afford to keep their Porsches topped off... with Venezuelan gas... at our ultimate expense.

Gunny asserts that this is some huge amount of money to try to make his weak point seem relevant. $170K is probably about enough money to mismanage the Iraq occupation for 1 second. Let's ask Land Deal Reid about the excessive energy usage by all of the casinos and resorts in Las Vegas and Reno. How much electricity do those tourist traps use? How much of Nevada's economy comes from those two cities? Where would he be without them?

GunnyG that Congress also raises and lowers mileage standards to further milk your wallet in taxes. Gas is taxed per gallon so the more you use the more they tax you.

We DO support the expenditure of our tax dollars toward the defense of our nation... which is the constitutional duty of government. NGTTY seems to be his own little self. He occaisionally says something worth reading and sometimes even agrees with some of our opinions, but that is not a large percentage of his comments.

I tend to have problems with those who think saying "neocon" is in itself a sufficient reason to dismiss an argument.

I also was a bit put off when his comment on my blog was "your blog sucks". Even insane leftists who came to do nothing but rant at least bothered to say a bit more than that.

Of course, his complaint was on a post explaining why I think Obama will lose, so I assume either he is an Obama fancier, or else one of those so psychotically upset with McCain that they get angry when someone argues that Obama might lose.
