Big Government-Not in the Liberal Sense

Limited Government
I believe government is necessary for the defense of the people, the enforcement of the laws, and for dealing with foreign nations. It is not the job of the government to take care of individual needs or desires. Unfortunately people have voted for a government that will look out for their individual needs as opposed to the collective needs of protection and law enforcement. By doing this people are slowly but surely giving up their individual rights and freedoms. I think it was De Tocqueville that said that democracy will survive until the voter realizes they can vote for their individual desires (paraphrase of course). Let people take care of themselves and others. Let the government defend and protect. Put the onus on the individual to take care of himself and others.

Level Playing Field
I believe the government should ensure a level playing field, and allow people to realize their own potential, as opposed to the Liberal dream of mandating everyone be "equal" whatever that means. Without checks and balances, and countervailing forces in society, the masses would attempt to legislate for their own betterment, and mob rule inevitably devolves into tyranny. The Democratic party, which has become representative of various minority constituencies, is on the road to this kind of "results" governing, and it will destroy the grand experiment started by the founding fathers.
