Poor Al!
He lost the race in '00. He was relegated to the "Aso Rans". He desperately needed a cause to put him once again in the limelight. Global Warming. Al discovered Global Warming and FOUND HIS CRUSADE!!. He played all in on this hand. And now Global Warming has been shown to be nonexistant.
Poor Al!
If he abandons his stance on Global Warming he will look like a Fool.
If he remains adamant on a non existant phenomena...he will look like a Fool.
And this was going to propel him back into the presidential strata of politics.
Poor Al.

Also, note how they now try to avoid the term "global warming" and now use the catch-all phrase "climate change". That's a sure-fire winner! Along the lines of "taxes" becoming "investments", and "terrorist acts" becoming "man-made disasters".
"Climate change" is totally effective, because the climate is ALWAYS changing! That's the nature of dynamic random systems.
These guys just love their word games. Clinton on the definition of the word "is".
Looks like we've both been busy today; new one at the Island, too.

For sure! You would think that they would want all of those opposed to "Global Warming" or, as you so correctly put it, "Climate Change" to argue their "false" theories.
As an engineer, if I am sure I am correct I welcome dissent so I can prove the dissenters wrong. It makes me look better.

And the worst of it is that we (both sides in this debate) could have worked together to save energy (by being more efficient), helped the environment (by the use of sensible recycling and looking for "green" products that reduce the cost of manufacture while doing a better job), and the increased use of renewable energy in an engineeringly sound manner.
But idiots like Al Bore have made engineers like myself increasingly on the other side of the debate. Which is a pity.

Especially when you consider that from 1978 thru 1981, I worked for TVA in Alabama. I was hired with one mission: REDUCE ELECTRICAL ENERGY USE AND DEMAND BUT IMPROVE TVA'S CLIENTS EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTION RATES.
By 1981, our group reduced electrical use and demand by 23%; but we also improved our customers' efficiency by over 31%. We recommended and helped install new and better lighting, new and better heating/cooling equipment, new and more efficient industrial "production" equipment, etc.
All of these recommendations had "paybacks" of no more than 3 years for industries, 5 years for commercial establishments, and 8 years for schools.
In this case, Greenies like S. David Freeman worked with engineers like myself to do it right.

I played this game with "Greenies" who wanted to do it right. And we proved, with TVA's blessings, that it could be done right with everybody winning.
It is truly sad what we are losing by wasting time like this. It is the same from the early 1970's when over 200 nuclear units were scheduled to be on line by 1985. Due to the Greenies screaming, only 3 made it.
If those units would have been built, our importation of foreign oil would be a fraction of what it is.

Absolutely. I used to get up in arms about the fact that we weren't getting a drop of oil from shale. NOW it's even become a clean process, thanks to Shell's newly developed steam extraction system.
The blocking of the nuke plants is another great example. The Greennazis want clean energy, but DON'T want nukes, about the cleanest source around.
These things aren't either/or proposals. We should be developing everything possible; let the market sort out usage allocation.
And hell! The idea that we're going to magically change away from fossil fuels in a decade or two... what have those people been smoking?
What's going to happen to the tens of millions of cars, trucks, buses, ships, aircraft and everything else that run on fossil fuels? They going to just disappear? Or magically convert themselves to... what? Steam? Phantasy electric cells? We all going to have roof-mounted solar panels?
Not only does such technology NOT exist in any form that's useful on a practical level -- other than driving some shoebox-sized car about 100 miles -- but it's going to cost TRILLIONS to convert a fossil-fuel based fleet and infrastructure to an alternate method.... IF AND WHEN that method becomes a practical alternative.

I have no problems with solar and wind power, IF they are treated the same way as coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear, and hydro power.
That is the rules of economics apply!
If a particular location and set of existing conditions indicate that solar is the most cost effective solution; fine, install solar power.
If the federal government wants to help "solar" research in an "R&D" manner; fine, install a solar generating facility at a military base and keep track of the results. But DON'T CHEAT!
To arbitrarily "force" the installation of solar power without any regard to economic considerations is not only poor engineering but it will also hurt the economy.

That was a travesty the other day. All great comments here, I'm sorry that I'm late to the party.
We should all understand by now that this issue is not about climate change but rather about government control and taxation. "Green" is just the vehicle.
A good point was made here about the "green" hysteria getting in the way of commonsense environmental issues. The war on CO2 won't do any more than cause massive misery and derail real progress.
People will, if they haven't already, be sickened by the constant drumbeat and the oppressive regulation and ultimately, IMO, reject the whole notion of "green" resulting in the baby be thrown out with the bath water.
We do a good job in this country of keeping air and water and land clean and productive. It's important that we clean up after ourselves but it takes a highly productive society to be able to afford this kind of stewardship. Point me at a socialist country that maintains the same high levels of environmental excellence.
As Brian pointed out, alternative energies must have time to develop and prove themselves as economically viable without government support or coercion. The politicization of the "green" movement stands in the way of progress in science.
The question of the environment and energy is best dealt with in the private sector where good ideas prosper and bad ideas go the way of the dinosaur.
Rigging the game doesn't make you right. As the old margarine commercial used to state, "You can't fool Mother Nature."

Is every country in the WORLD going to switch over? That idea is stupid and foolish beyond belief.
So, our cars won't be marketable elsewhere.
Further, will foreign manufacturers want to switch their production just for the American market, and pass up the other half of the world market?

This whole global cooling/warming/changing thing is so very complcated as it stands, to insert another option into the mix simply confuses the masses.
You saw how things got all mixed up at the outset when we went into Global Cooling in the 70's, they let people get involved and next thing you know, the people start noticing there's no ice caps developing in Phenoix. So they had to switch the name to Warming, then after people noticed a couple of the 'Warming' confrences getting snowed in the had to switch again and call it Climate Change, (which I thought was a ringer cause there's generally some kind of change every day).
So you see the more people are involved the more complicated the issue is, better this way.

As BrianR is so fond of saying: "Goebbels' BIG LIE" strategy.
The problem with the "BIG LIE" is eventually it comes back to "bite your b*tt". The NAZIs found this out in WW2. The Battle of Stalingrad, the 8th Air Force's daylight precision bombing of Germany, and the Normandy Invasion are prime examples of this occuring (there are many others).

So true. The "Green Movement" has become an "opiate" for the Liberal masses. And Al Bore has become the "High Priest".

"This is the Greenies main problem: They don't make sense."
There you have the crux of the whole problem. Climate change, AGW, global cooling, It doesn't matter what it is called, it doesn't stand up to the basic scientific method which should be familiar to anyone who was even vaguely paying attention in Middle School.
Government is ill suited to dealing with issues such as this. They are like surgeons with ten thumbs.
You won't be buying a new Edsel this year because it was a bad idea but as Ronald Reagan told us, "Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!", even when they are terrible ideas.
Far from being over, this debate is just getting started.

If Al Bore and his fellow conspirators are "backed" into a corner, the movement could explode. I assume that this is why Big Al DOES NOT WANT TO debate. (You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time. But you can't fool all of the people all of the time.)
Problem is, will Big Al ever get forced into that corner? There are "forces" in the world that will eventually mandate a debate. But when?

The "masses" are THAT dumb. Of that there is no doubt. On the other hand, the "leaders" are smart, very smart.
To stop the "leaders" would require the elimination of their ability to obtain and retain power. Short of revolution, how can that be done?

there are different kinds of revolution, pick the one appropriate to the situation. A media revolution is sinking the New York Times. Long live the New Media. A cultural revolution is bringing middle aged people out of their houses to Tea Partys. A political revolution is killing the GOP (it doesn't get it, still). There are a lot of cards to play. What say you?

As a "hot blooded Southerner" it is easy to say, "Let's start the dance" and go to open revolt. But as a historian of the War Between the States, I know that ANYTHING we can do short of open rebellion (and a civil war) is the correct way to play this game. (H*ll, there are still parts of Mississippi that haven't been rebuilt since THE WAR. I hate "false" bravado and starting a war at this point just because you are "mad" is "false" bravado.)
That is why I have constantly argued to my relatives, friends, and acquaintances that open revolt is the LAST thing we need to do. If "open revolt" becomes necessary, then we have another "ballgame".
The "media revolution" is destroying the Liberal newspapers. The "cultural revolution" and TEA Parties are scaring the Left. The "political revolution" NEEDS TO and is killing the GOP, because the GOP still doesn't get it.
You are "dead-on" accurate, there are a lot of cards to play.

The big lie theory lives.
The truth is the weather is getting more severe.
The truth is mankind cannot do a damn thing about it, positive or negative.
We could not change the weather for the good or the bad by our actions.
God has the final say on that one.
They did the same to a bunch of people in 50's by trying to convince them, liberals love the little guy and the conservatives love the rich and hate the poor people.
It took me years to convince some baby boomers around here that that was the biggest lie ever told.
New Post up, Stop by when you can.

No place but Acme.
It's a shame.
The powers that be decided Warner Bros cartoons do be too violent for little minds and took them off the air...after a couple of years of severely censoring them. Look what they replaced them with. A bunch of Japanese animation 3-times as violent.
But..
In just a few years more Wyle E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn and Daffy Duck will be known to but just a fer.

As an engineer, and a Christian, I can totally agree. The "dynamics" of planet earth (and the solar system) are so immense as to be totally beyond our abilities to change. The Laws of Thermodynamics and Physics are quite clear on this.
To have a chance of changing the weather of earth, we would have to use energies of a reasonable proportion to the energy of the sun. Even the so-called "nuclear winter" after a nuclear exchange would probably not be as dramatic as we have been lead to believe. (On the other hand, if the earth were struck by a meteor the size of Mt. Everest, then we would see climate change. But look at the energy involved with such a hit. It would be far more than a "nuclear exchange" by many factors.)

That is exactly the case. Socialists of both political persuasion have created a gigantic vulnerability in the form of the nanny state.
Civil disobedience doesn't have to come in the form of open rebellion, we can just flood the system and crash the whole thing in much the same way that the anti-amnesty forces crashed the senate phone system.
For example, what if everyone filed for social security disability at the same time?
Any system stuffed with so many entitlements and trying to control so many aspects of people's private lives is begging for overload.

Sarge, you have come up with a wonderful, passive "attack" technique! The vulnerability of the nanny state is extremely large. And using this technique, I don't have to load up my FN49!
I am going to think about this and write an article about it.
