I am guessing that the reason Afghanistan deaths receive less attention is that our involvement there is not as politically charged.

Almost everyone agreed that we should be in Afghanistan, but many were more opposed to Iraq. Because of this they can say "I told you so" every time someone dies in Iraq. They can't say I told you so in Afghanistan. Without something to gain politically, why bother focusing on it.

It is a tragedy that this is the mindset, but it probably is.
