You got it exactly right M3. They hope to make it appear they are the only party of "Democracy" by adding the "ic" on the end.

Truthfully, I don't think it's even grammatically correct to call them the Democratic party. Democrat is a noun that describes a person. Democratic is an adjective that describes a political PROCESS.

I wish Bush had not apologized.
