Unions are Out of Date
I think the argument could successfully be made that the unions provided some necessary reform in worker's rights. However, much of ths is long since in the past, but unions are still working under the same outmoded model of "workers" vs. "management."
Because the union is no longer needed, it has expanded into areas that really have nothing to do with its original mission. One of these areas is politics. It is amazing to me how many union members still have no idea about the politics of their union.
You may have guessed that I am not a union member. The law protects me from abuses, and I've obtained private insurance in the event of legal unpleasantness.

Unions brought about change
and fair employment, which has now been handed off to FEHA and OSHA and others, but there are still employers that take advantage, because like other business, even in the schools, what it all comes down to is the bottom dollar. They will do whatever it takes to save a nickel, and usually the employees are the first to suffer . . . however, the school system is sort of like the federal government, it may not be a revenue problem, but instead a spending problem. That's what it comes down to with the unions, too. Corruption has made the unions impotent, and the government's hand in everything have made them useless.
