Worse yet, how many graduate without a working knowledge of a domestic.....er, woops...We no longer have one....
Maybe it's time for the Republicans to experience a time out so that they may see the Light.
Which laws can you ignore? I know on most interstates one has to be going at least 15 mph over the limit in order to peek the fuzz's interest.
Why is it called the "feminist movement?" Because it's full of @#$% and looking to pass it on.
Tolerence for islam?
"Are you tired of taking responsibility for your actions? Have you tried to accomplish a goal only to fail miserably and found noone to blame but yourself?
"Well, try the all new islam. The new islam peaked 1400 years ago and has expected nothing from its followers ever since.
"The new islam provides justifications for being perpetually pi$$ed, including Jews and Christians.
"So, if you find yourself isolated because of irrational actions and can find no rationalizations, or are in prison, try the all new islam.
"The all new islam. Completely unproductive since 702 A.D."

Why should I shut up? Aren't they going to answer my questions? Is there a list of approved questions?
Why should I let Senators do my thinking for me? You can't possibly point to the results they've acheived as something I should be content with, can you? It they're so smart, how come nothing works? Do they actually stand for anything? I think they just talk a lot.

I find your views on matters Jewish most enlightening, and your writing style very readable. But please stop trying so hard to enter my blog roll.
I reserve those spots for my intellectual friends and a few national blogs. Stop by more often and contribute your ideas here at the Heartland. You are very welcome, it's a good crowd, and we want to get to know you a little better. You have my personal standing invitation. Rest assured I check out your stuff fairly often, and it is pretty impressive.

Glad you called out blacktygrrr. I thought I was the only one:) Went to his blog and told him that selling himself on others' blogs without posting a comment on their work was rude. He must be from New York.
Churches: dead right on this one. That's why I left a certain worldwide Church-too much appealing to my soft side. Blessedly I walked in to one where on the first day they told me about my responsibilities as a man, Hell, and how dangerous missionary work can be. Christianity, it turns out, can be an awesome adventure, and not just bland.
Trent Lott - I think only his cousins, about 43 of 'em, get to vote. This almost ensures his re-election. How many times are we to be embarassed by him? I'm waiting for him to start tricking the dog and whacking him on the backside with a 2 by 4. (see Bugs B.)
Islam - the great JimmyC covered it pretty well. So I'll add my comments, naturally. Like liberalism, whenever Islam is tried on a large scale, poverty, hate, and illiteracy results. Except in Beverly Hills, where liberalism results in wealth, hate, and illiteracy.
All these special studies majors in college(gay, lesbian, women, african-american, native american): arent't the fields kinda limited in terms of work, once these folks graduate? I mean you can only get jobs as writers for XXL mag, as a back-up singer for the New Village People, a fluffer, or a lumberjack.

I cannot take it when a kid says they are majoring in anything that cannot get them a real job. It is all I can do to abstain from boistrous laughter. The only places these degrees can be put to work are in the Government, where else? And then, a few years down the road, when their peers with real brains are rolling in the proverbial dough, they are bitter and nasty, crying about what they had to give up. All that emotion and sympathy minus the logic gets them nothing and they are jealous. And they will spew to the friends about THEIR greed!! Go figure...they are never responsible for their own choices.

Welcome back. How was the GOE? I want to personally thank you for going and representing for those of us that wanted to go, but couldn't.
A liberal arts education has a place, but traditionally it was a stepping stone to an MRS degree or a prelude to Law School. A good grounding in rhetoric, logic, and theater are desirable attributes for an attorney. But if these degrees are ends in themselves, especially as they are currently taught, I see no point in them.
Dr. Sowell notes that while the subjects aren't harmful in and of themselves, they displace valuable time that would be much better used to impart actual substance. The time spent in college is surprisingly brief, and if you don't receive a true education there, it is highly unlikely to ever be acheived.
Good points Nee, and welcome back.

Only the government could create a career path for busybodies intent on inserting themselves into the private affairs of others. Remember, while most are harmless lazy bureaucrats, some actually want to change the world. These are the folks that once given a "Hammer", see the rest of us as a series of nails requiring their attention.
Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.
-- T. S. ELiot
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

ScarletP, Scottie,
It's not just the government, but also government funded institutions and it is spreading to the private sector. After all, with all of the rules, regulations and laws that are becoming increasingly enacted, private sector organizations need to have such people around to help them with compliance.
Let me see if I can describe how I see it works. You've got these different 'studies' that emerge on campus and then receive the impremature of the educational establishment. These 'educated' individuals then start to form groups to essentially lobby the government to enact the enlightened reforms they propose. These groups will often get government grants and even be involved in the drafting of the legislation itself. Once this legislation gets passed it needs to be implemented. The first place it gets implemented is, of course, within the government itself. Hence the career path for such individuals in government. As it gets more broadly implemented, more and more sectors require these individuals to represent them and help them from falling afoul of the various laws and regulations.
Basically, it seems to me that they have copied what lawyers have already done.

First of all, I don't think the government has any business funding anyone's education except servicemen and women. Nor artists nor whatever. If they would lower taxes and fees and license costs and regulations, that would put more money in our pockets so that we may pursue happiness, including education, art, and business etc. It is a vicious cycle and they know what they're doing.
The really bad thing is that once Uncle Sam gives you any money, he can tell you what to do. I think some rackets, like the teachers' union, for example would move more to the center if they didn't have Uncle Sam Dem telling them what to do.

If the government gives every student $1,000 in tuition assistance, tuition will rise by . . . yep, $1,000. The the government gets to decide which favored group receives these benefits and which will now have to jump over the higher hurdle this increased cost creates.
I think you have the cash flow in the wrong direction with respect to teachers unions. The unions usurp funds from the membership and use it to further the NEA's political ambitions, usually through the Democratic party. The Union controls the government, not the other way around in your example.

Scottie, I'm supprised in you. Any good capitalist can see the point in the current lib arts education. It's a product for people to buy. As the product became more popular, more people wanted it. Unfortunately, the original product was of little value to the new clientelle, hence a new product was created to suit the need. The clientelle gets their degree and the school gets their money. Seems like commerce to me. If the client actually wants to learn something along the way that's completely up to them, most professors are more than happy to talk about their research.

Well AC, I can recall
when a liberal arts degree denoted a certain level of academic and intellectual ability. You can keep calling the product by the same old name all the while changing it; but the product being marketed today certainly isn't what it used to be, notwithstanding the same label.
But to be fair, a lot of things on the market today aren't what they used to be. For example: Bread used to be bread, but the stuff we get today is so saturated with water, you have to toast it twice. Once to dry it out, and once to actually toast it.

A Guiness analogy: why give some one your good beer that costs $2 a bottle when they'll complain its to bitter when you can give them the shwag in the back of the fridge your friends let over and make them happy.
It works with cheese burgers and coffee also, you might try it with bread...

is that in practice it drives out the Guiness (quality) in favor of the shwag (marginal) until there is no more Guiness and only shwag left. Like currency, the bad drives out the good.
You assume there will always be Guiness, but if no one serves it, its sales fall until eventually it is no longer available or too expensive. Witness its $2 a bottle price, even though it is made from essentially the same inputs used to make shwag.

I do not know if it was your intention but I laughed a great deal when reading this. Not because it was poorly done or because I disagree with it, but quite the opposite. I must say "BRAVO" to you.
Fortunately, for now, the Immigration "Reform" Bill (Shamnesty) has been laid to rest as well as the "Fairness Doctrine". Now if we can just work together and get "our" government to actually;
1. build a fence (a wall would be better)
2. begin taking the money they had intended to allocate for Shamnesty and actually put it towards border enforcement (both north and south)
3. begin honestly looking at why we are not enforcing our current laws (are they really broken or do we just chose to not apply them?)
Anyways, great post.

The hacks having their heads handed to them on scamnesty will, I suspect, make them even MORE eager to push THAT one through.

My hope for this essay was go cause a chuckle while the idea goes in, and an appreciation for the underlying truth as it sits on the mind for awhile.
As to the wall, BUILD IT! If we are at war as I believe we are, it makes no sense not to do so. And the cost isn't the problem; the will to do it is! Shortly after 9/11, Canada was flooded with Pakistani's and others from the middle east requesting asylum at entry points on the US border. When the writing was on the wall that the laws would be enforced, there was a rational response by those here illegally: They LEFT voluntarily rather than risk being sanctioned by a system prodded into action.

The purpose of women's studies, qu**r studies, ethnic studies, etc is not to learn anything, but to indoctrinate. You know that, but thought I'd point it out.
Multiculturalism is not to say all cultures are equal, but that all cultures, other than ours, are superior. The same goes for moral equivalence.
