You know i agree. And i just bought an L1A1 i lucked into at a decent price at a gun show. The more i fool around with it, the better i like it. Got it cheap because the barrel had been shortened to 17 inches. Nice job, good crown. And the balance and handiness is much improved. I am looking seriously at assault rifle look-alikes as investments. I cleaned up when the last ban was established, and lets face it (sob) its at least 50/50 we'll see another. The obvious fact that neither the establishment nor the expiration had the slightest effect on crime means nothing to the gun hater/grabbers.

Let's hope that SCOTUS does the RIGHT thing and torpedo the DC gun ban AND state what we ALREADY KNOW.

Excellent!
Further, how would"banning" guns take guns away from criminals, who BY DEFINITION break the law?
As to "militia", for your use, here's the defining law:
Title 10 USC, sec 311
Section 311. Militia: composition and classes
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are -
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard
and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.
So, as you can clearly see, all law-abiding legal residents of the US are, in fact, members of either the organized or unorganized militia, BY DEFINITION AND LAW.
I suppose the case can be made that people lose their status after age 45. Do they then also lose their gun rights (per liberals)? Let them make THAT case, and see how far it flies. Age discrimination, anyone?

Well-timed piece today. In the Free Press/Fishwrap today, there is an article about how the expanded CCW law here in Mich. has....wait for it.... resulted in a NET DECREASE in murders, and NO INCREASE in accidental or otherwise shootings. The libsnark,Dawson Bell, who wrote the article was SURPRISED to see the statistics,as they were CERTAIN this "bad legislation" would result in ALL sorts of mayhem. These fools never learn,it seems.

As usual, spot-on.
As for age, 45 is rather young to be excluding folks from the militia. There are people on active-duty who are 45 and older! I'd say 55 and below, although a spry person at age 60? Goos enough to stand post! haha.

Well, in Feb 2009 I hit the big six-oh. I can still outshoot almost anyone; if I can see it, I can hit it. So I guess I still have some militia value left in me somewhere. Even if it's only standing post... as long as I can do it in my lawn chair. Maybe one of those scooter things, with a gun mount on the handlbars.
Clyde, those press maroons are always so surprised that after their predicitions of an OK Corral result (and they use that example EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN TIME), the crime rates actually fall.
Talk about ignoring the historical lesson! And these guys get published, when they shouldn't even be allowed out of their houses without a leash so they don't run out into traffic!

One more from "Winnie"
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."

Off The Subject...but;
Brian R's post about turning Six-Oh (did it long time ago) and still being able to make muster just reminded me of something my Jarhead drinking buddy and I have been discussing...
You know all ranchers on the Southern border are pretty whizzed off about the illegals tramping across their land, leaving trash, stealing whatever ain't nailed down...
I think it is time for some of us old codgers to instruct these ranchers on how to make and conceal punji stakes...I have found out that 3" drywall screws in a 1x6 makes a pretty good replica. Easily concealable on a well used trail under a couple shovelfulls of sand. Punji stakes and a few other little tricks might convince the coyotes to take a route other than through your property....

Maureen Dowd belongs on a leash no matter what. Talk about a bowser! She's one "Dowdy" broad.
I like the punji stake idea. But why limit it to 3" drywall screws? 9" nails would work fine, too.
YLG, isn't it interesting that none of the libs ever want to post a "gun-free zone" sign at their houses? I wonder why? Isn't that hypocritical on their part? Talking the talk, but not walking the walk?
Nee... I already did my time! Back in the bad old days when everybody hated the military. Anyway, at almost 60, I'm too old to be an E-5 again. That would look ridiculous. Though my old uni still fits.
That is actually a weird dream I have sometimes. I look down, and I see I'm in my old uniform, at my old rank. I look up, and I'm in some 60s-era military installation, and I'm trying to convince everybody that there's been a huge mistake, I'm not supposed to be back in the Army at my age, I can't afford it, yada yada. All of a sudden, I'm back in Vietnam, and I'm looking around thinking I can't haul all this gear around anymore, what am I doing here, etc. And how come I'm still only a sergeant?!? I should at least be a SMAJ or COL or something more fitting to my age. I must be the oldest E-5 in the US military establishment.
It's all very confusing, and funny when I wake up. To me, it's all about the cut in pay!

Gun Control
The history of gun control has nothing to do with crime and everything to do with fear of assassination of political and public officials. FDR realized this when he banned full auto weapons. Most were not used in typical crimes, but during local and national elections, especially in Chicago. Al Capone’s gang killed more people over politics than they did in the commission of crimes.
During the sixties, with the assassination of Kennedy, King, and Kennedy the gun grabbers decided that reasonable, law abiding adults, could turn into assassins. They used crime as the propaganda tool. When Reagan was shot, they got religion again.
Gun control is political control. Every tyranny started by disarming the populace. It says something about the people we elect if they fear us. What do they have to be afraid of?

High time for the left to admit that they have lost the war on guns. Banning legal guns with a wide open southern border makes it meaningless.
It seems to me that the "shot heard 'round the world" was a response to British gun and powder confiscation.
BrianR, oldsters like us have done it before. The oldest member of my 3rd g-grandfather's unit, 16th Va Inf., Pickett's Div., was 63 when they fought at Gettysburg.
In fact, I will make the case that the older types make for the perfect sniper. The patience of age, the ability, nay, desire to remain motionless for extended periods are the perfect qualifications. All the rest is just sight alignment and trigger squeeze.

2 1/2" or 3" Drywall screws are ideal. They are long enough to penetrate most any shoe leather plus a good ways into the foot. That and the small dab of feces lovingly applied to each dw screw makes for a very sore, infected foot. Out in the middle of the desert and the coyotes will probably do the victim in themselves saving us tax dollars deporting the mf.
Also in mind is a spring tensioned snagline tripwire using Eagle Claw snelled hooks.

My neighborhood rejoiced when the Christmas wish lists came out one year and 3 of us (ages 9 to 11) were asking for BB/pellet guns. Our neighborhood had a problem with squirrels that ate through roofs and inhabited the attics, running around and occaisionally up and down the insides of the walls, messing up wiring, tearing holes in the roofs and eaves..... The homeowners put a bounty on squirrels and set up a firing range in my backyard. Squirrel population was basically eliminated by summertime.
Dang, when I retire from the Navy, I'll only have a month left to be in the militia (turned 25 during boot camp). Think I'll put in an age-waiver request.......
