What Motivates the Religious Right?

Well done and a concise explanation of the motivators for the religious right. I suspect #7 will present an issue to many non-religious folk. After all, if you don't think you're bound by the laws "your creator" disagrees with, what should society do with you?

By the way, this is where the comparisons between Christians and terrorists come into play: both think they're only accountable to a higher authority, and each thinks they have a direct line to God. But that's where the comparison ends: Christians are nothing like our terrorist enemies.

Anyway, I get a little scared thinking that a group of people in our society don't think they have to abide by our laws if they say their God disagrees with them (since I don't believe in God, to me that means a person can pick and choose which laws to follow and simply point to God as the excuse). Luckily most religious people are good people, but it's still unsettling.

I can see how this might be unsettling, but for the American RR, it hasn't come into play in major ways. For example, the RR thinks that "the government" is wrong about abortion, but the RR does not advocate bombing abortion clinics - rather, it actively tries to change the law and convince individuals that abortion is wrong. It would come into play more if something happened like banning the Bible and church attendance. Many in the RR would break those laws, either openly or in secret, because God commands them to read the Bible and not to forsake gathering together for worship. God does not command them to bomb abortion clinics, or kill unbelievers.
