Excellent analyses, I think, John David,
except that there's this pesky thingy called the "U.S. Constitution". Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP are unconstitutional. The federal government has no enumerated authority or power to involve itself or to dictate squat vis-a-vis healthcare or medical care or medical insurance.

You advocate for a Sucker's Deal
This is a very dangerous period because Nationalization will still occur even without an overt government run insurance plan like this "public option" provision everyone keeps fixating on - everything else contained in the plan is just as dangerous and is not being discussed in any kind of a targeted manner.
Here are the core elements what will be contained in the “health care reform compromise” after the so-called “public option” is in all likelihood dropped:
(a) Federal Regulation aka HEALTH CZAR/DEATH PANELS
(b) Employer/Individual Mandates aka NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE
(c) Government Subsidies aka MIDDLE CLASS MEDICAL WELFARE
With the Federal Government setting the rules, forcing everyone to participate, and is paying the bills for most of the middle class through subsidies how is this anything other than Nationalization?
Sorry, but letting the door open for mandating "catastrophic coverage" simply opens the door for ever larger government interventions which distrot the market and drive up costs - this is the history of government intervention. To see this at work today, look no further then the expodling costs of "Romneycare" which is exactly what you advocate replicating in your "conservative compromise". You advocate the ultimate suckers deal. Conservative should be advocate for a truly free market in health insurance not a government dictated one.

MAROTTA spot on, Universal Ins., will
break us. Especially the way the spendthrift Obama and his Minions waste our tax money! If Obama doesn't respect the majority and imposes his socialistic type desire for a public option, there will be more then a lower standard of living for all, he will be a one termer. I'm wondering lately, whose Country is he the President of? His words, programs and the anti-America Racist politicians etc., he surrounds himself with is most telling! God help us,
Ex Democrat

Kennedy/Obama Healthcare Plan
Anything the parsites in D.C. manage to pass will transform into the liberals wet-dream "public option" within 4 years..Is it coicidence that his plan isn't to go into effect until JUST after the next pres. election? POTUS knows he would be chased out of town if Americans had the time to experience this system first before voting in the next race for the WhiteHouse.

The ultimate sucker's deal is nationalized medicine or is one million Canadians waiting on line for necessary surgical procedures not enough for you-with one million more waiting to see specialists. Besides, nationalization is bad for the nation's health, i.e., fiscal health. CBO estimates say it all.
