Comment on: The Ramblings of an Average American

Average Joe and the American Dream

"We should make the poor uncomfortable and kick them out of poverty". That's Americanism. Freedom, to succeed or fail, on your own efforts. Don't redistribute wealth, create new wealth. Then there are the Socialists, and exposing them is a unforgivable sin to the Enemedia and Democrats. The front lines of the culture war are in Journalism and Academia. I'm glad we've got you in there Wil!

Great Post

I chose to get my education, but I keep getting side-tracked, be it health, kids, divorce or whatever, one was a near-fatal car wreck. I'm still fighting to get there though and I'm finishing three classes this semester...Yeah! ;)

This reminds me of a story of a girl who was embarrassed of her father being a Republican...

The girl & her father...

A young woman about to finish her 1st year of college, who considered herself a liberal Democrat in favor of higher taxes to support government programs - redistribution of wealth; was ashamed her father was a Republican, which she openly expressed. Based on lectures she’d participated in & chats with a professor, she felt her father harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought was his. One day she challenged her father on his opposition to higher taxes & the need for government programs. The professors had to be right & she told her father; he responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered haughtily she had a 4.0 GPA, & it was tough to maintain, she was taking a difficult course load & was constantly studying, which left her no time to party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend & didn't have many college friends because she spent her time studying. Her father listened & then asked 'How is your friend Audrey doing?' She replied 'Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she NEVER studies, & she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She’s so popular on campus; college for her is a blast! She's always invited to all the parties & lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes.' Her wise father asked his daughter, 'Why don't you go to the Dean's office & ask him to deduct 1.0 off YOUR GPA & give it to Audrey? Then you’ll both have a 3.0 GPA & certainly it would be an equal distribution of GPA.' The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, “What a crazy idea & how would it be fair? I've WORKED really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time & hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing. She played while I worked my tail off!' The father slowly smiled, winked & said gently 'Welcome to the Republican party.'

Colin Powell

New post on my blog on this scenario...unfolding.

Yes, Colin Powell

I think this may be your best blog yet Wil and that's saying a lot because there are many good ones! I did watch "Meet the Press" and listen to Powell give his support to Obama. In one way I was not surprised because he has trod toward the left side of Republicans for quite a while. On the other hand I was dismayed because a retired general and former Sec of State chose a president because he will "energize" the country and bring back "status" to the United States. Obama has gained an important ally in his bid as Powell has the perceived gravitas the candidate lacks.

Meanwhile, the pundits were estatic and there was much rejoicing. They felt the proverbial nail had been injected into McCain's coffin. Andra Mitchell opined how the "real" McCain had been hyjacked by the radical right including Palin. She remarked on all McCain's talk about Joe the Plumber and how under the radar in importance that issue is and Powell agreed on both aspects. So we have been marginalized and put in our place as the radical fringe far right section of the Republican party. Powell said it all when he said we are the divisive and hateful part of the party that true repubs need to separate themselves from if they are to be successful in the future. Sigh...
