In a country where the soccer team would be tortured for losing it does seem fairly improbable that the pilot would go unpunished.

Something to consider is that contrary to popular drive-by liberal thought, Iraq of the 80's was not a client of the United States, they were a Soviet client state who just happened to be bleeding the Iranians.

Since it was not in our interest for either party in the war to become a regional hegemon, we provided various aid and intelligence to both Iran and Iraq to keep them stalemated.

If you want SWAG on why the Stark got torched, I'd start by guessing that SH found out about our duplicity and wasn't happy with us cutting off his access to programs he was abusing to obtain WMD's to kill his own people with on top of the Iranians.
