We've Looked At Life From Both Sides Now

control

Liberals can fix the world if they could control everybody and everything, right?

well, recently you hear the media...

discussing how trying to have it both ways always catches you.

now, either the average american is a lazy, incompetent nitwit who couldn't possibly help solve any of the dire problems facing the nation today, or he's not.

if he is NOT the incompetent nitwit, he doesn't need the government to give him free condoms, bail out his bad home loan, or be counselled on his bad choices with the whole iraq situation. he also doesn't need to have the government take trans-fats off his restaurant menu as if he were an eight-year-old.

if, though, he could be trusted to do things that make us all happy in unicorn land, well, then, i guess he'll be out there, everywhere, with his little air gauge.

i guess control is a tricky thing. if you want to start putting the energy crisis in the hands of the average americans with a gas gauge, maybe you should start requiring him to handle other situations in a humane and appropriate manner. rather than just throwing your hands up in the air and saying, oh, what the hell, he's going to do it anyway.

you want to have that attitude, start having it with iraq and air gauges...

and...

clips (from 2006):

The United States is the only nation in the world that has placed a substantial amount of its oil and natural gas potential off-limits. This includes restrictions on drilling in most of the nation’s offshore areas.

Despite current high oil and natural gas prices, these longstanding offshore drilling bans remain in place. Congress should revise this policy...

...As a result, access to 85% of federally controlled offshore areas has been restricted, including the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, portions of the areas off the shores of Alaska, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Estimates vary regarding the amount of energy in these areas, but it is likely enough to add stability to energy markets and make a real difference in oil and natural gas prices for years to come...

...These estimates are highly uncertain because the off-limits areas have not been thoroughly explored...

and back to the air gauges...

we're talking about hundreds of millions of people using these things routinely.

now, in the obama health care plan, we won't even be requiring them to get plans in place because this would result in punishing people for not having health care plans in a world of subsidized health care.

if we can't use such mechanisms to promote compliance even in the case of health care, i sincerely doubt he'd suggest using it with air gauges. but we'd of course need that with your average american... so, even by dem logic, it's a ridiculous comment.

lazy, incompetent nitwits

Thing is, beltway girl, there ARE plenty of Americans who are lazy incompetent nitwits. Always have been. Question is, is it the government's job to take care of them? I think not. Life is a beach, and you get out what you put in, a simple fact being lost on a generation of kids without critical thinking skills. We only want the freedom to fail or succeed on our own best efforts. Get the government out of our way.

role of government

well, it may be a beach, but if there are raving lunatics going around ruining it for everyone's use, the government does have an obligation to do something.

right now, their role is letting your daughter have an abortion without your permission, getting contraceptives in school, again, perhaps without your permission, telling you it's your own fault that you're such an out-of-touch parent while they then turn around and hand a license to pollute to the entertainment industry, but won't encourage oil independence for the country.

guess it's okay to ban pollution where the coastline's concerned, but other types of pollution are okay.

davecatbone=wow, how long have you

been blogging? was just at your blog. you have a really neat blog, and i couldn't help but notice the TONS of posts! you must have been at this for a good, long time.

beltway, just moderately long....

I started early March 2007, and there's plenty that've been around way longer than that. That said, I've seen a fair share of good people come and go. I'm glad you're writing though, keep up the good work!

hey, thanks, heading over to your...

afghanistan post now. looked interesting, and i was saving it for a late read. it's amazing how interetsing these blogs can be! you pick up a lot, and learn about things you don't know much about. i'm looking forward to seeing it more b/c there's really not much on afghanistan on the blogs.

kev

okay, so bill is paying you to keep the hill half of the hillbill closeted away. whatever bill paid you, i'll double it...

oh, wait, i saw their tax returns!

but i wish i could double it.

do good intentions count? do bad ones count?

do mixed ones count?
