Misunderstood
You really do not understand the Catholic position concerning BC. It is materialistic. It is a spiritual/religious belief concerning sex. Catholics believe that sex is both unitive (uniting spouses in a spiritual bond that transcends physical pleasure) and procreative (rearing of children). You cannot have one with out the other. Using birth control says "No" to God and perverts the marriage act; it becomes no more than mutual masterbation, and turns the wife into nothing more than an objective sex object. Pope Pious VI wrote an encyclical on this in 1968. His warnings were prophetic. FirstThings.com has a recent commentary on this.
Birth Control predated the acceptence of abortion on demand by about 40 years. Until the Lambreth Conference (Anglican Conference) in 1930, all Christian sects were united in thier stand against Birth Control. The acceptence of birth control paved the way for abortion. Silly arguements concerning over-population were just a device to rationalize to soft Westeners that thier selfishness could be rationalized vis-avis "saving the planet".

JPK is right
But did not mention that NFP has the same effectiveness rate (when done correctly) as the pill (when used correctly). I have worked with pregnant women who wanted to have their children and wanted to turn their lives around. Almost all of them were "on the pill" when they got pregnant. Most women who get abortions were also on the pill.
And, yes, Pope Pius correctly predicted (among other things) the rise in abortion in Humanae Vitae. People think that this was either on the level of 'duh' or was a fluke. Contraception was supposed to reduce abortions, after all! But omnipresent contraception allows otherwise intelligent people to have sex, get pregnant, and still claim that they didn't know how it happened! It provides the rationale for abortion as a stopgap contraceptive measure.
Animal, you should really learn more about the Church's position before criticizing it.

Birth Control & Catholocism.............
As a Catholic and a Christian, I see both worlds here. It is taught at a very young age that the propligation of life is Gods will and our duty as followers of the faith.
How ever, now where does it say we are to be like rabbits and breed till we drop. So they, the Priests) give us a wise solution to the delema. Abstanence or Rythmn method over contriception.
The first works for them, since they have sworn to abstain from relations other than with God. (Religious Relations)
That fails in a marriage of affection and lusting for the others touch.
Rythmn, well lets say more children have success with rythmn in dancing than they ever had in not producing an offspring.
So dependant on A) Age, B) Nationallity, C) And communications, does the subject work when talking Contriception.
Many younger Catholics us contriception, because it is their choice, many do not also because it is their choice.
You made a choice of two, my estranged wife made the choice for us and had her tubes tied. I have never forgiven her for it, it was a choice we both needed to make not one.
Children are the greatest gift in life, we as parents can ever get. And to deny someone that based on yours or mine preception of what we should do is wrong, un christian and Dictatorial.
