Joe the jerk part 1
Have you ever really watched the “joe the plumber” video? When Obama approaches Joe and identifies himself, Joe asks the famous/infamous question. Using numbers and percentages that are stated in the video (unless you only watch the edited versions), Joe would pay more taxes. But did you ever bother to do the math? Joe states the business will make 270,000-280,000 dollars profit. I will use 275,00 for calculating. Obama’s tax increase occurs at 250,000. In other words, Bush and Obama’s taxes are the same to that point. In the plan Obama tells Joe about, his tax rate would go from 36 to 39% at $250,000. Joe would pay an additional 3 % on $25,000 (275,000 –250,000= 25000) Under Bush’s current rate, Joe would have to pay 36% of that 25,000. Under Obama’s tax plan, Joe would have to pay 39% of that 25,000. The difference between the 2 plans? $750. Seven hundred and fifty dollars. $250 less than a thousand dollars. How does that $750 extra on $275,000 profit cause job loses? Or stifle the economy? If someone who made $275,000 can’t pay an extra $750 (chump change, dinner for 8 at a good seafood restaurant), who can? On top of this, Joe is a typical wisea**/dumba**. Is he liberal or conservative? It doesn’t matter. Both parties have them. The reason I say he is an a** is because he asks a question, thinks he knows the answer, and when he doesn’t hear what he expected, he digs himself in deeper. Some questions need more than a sound bite to answer. Obama was in the middle of a clear explanation of the information I listed above, which was the answer to Joe’s original question. The problem was that Joe hadn’t done the math either. The reason he not done the math came out a few days later. Watch the video. Obama didn’t allow Joe to interrupt because Obama wanted Joe to know his taxes would only go up $750. The number didn’t matter to Joe, only the sound bite.

The reason Joe had not done the math was because there was no way in he!! Joe would be getting that business. Banks don’t make loans to people who haven’t paid their previous tax obligations. Joe was seriously in arrears. Joe didn’t have a license.
The tax arrears or the license or the illegal way the information about Joe was gotten has no bearing on the original issue. That part of the tax plan would have generated more tax revenues. It wouldn’t suppress business or cause business failures.

Tim,
I am not sure you understand the big picture here, The Joe the Plumber gaffe was just a situation that caught Obama off guard and made him explain in detail the root of his policy making motivations and he laid it out plainly, the man is a socialist plain and simple. Now - who and what "Joe" is to the avergage guy is moot... it's what happened that needed to be talked about.
I dont' agree with your underlying anaysis of the Obama tax plan... there are some fundemental errors in your quantifying a benefit here. If 40% pay no tax at all, you have 60% that have to make that up. There is no addition by substraction, the job providers will just cut back and that would deepen our economics for sure. Tax brackets never had fairness in mind [in case you wondered] they had liquidity first and foremost to cosider.
-That Darn Republican
