Barbara Seeks Ratings With Show on Transgendered Children

I would like to take a moment to address some of your points in this article, if I may. First, Gender Identity Disorder is a medical condition and recognized in the medical community, you can look it up in the DSM. These children have been through psychoanalysis by licensed psychologists to determine that they did suffer from GID. As for the risk of these kids being at greater risk for being bullied, how many of their peers do you think actually watch 20/20 on a regular basis? I mean, really, it isn't something most 6 or 10 year olds would be interested in, and the one who was 16 is certainly old enough to make his own decision on the matter. Lastly, it is true that a young child does not remember hardly any people or events. However, a person's gender identity is neither. Their sense of gender identity is not a single memory they would have, but something they live with every day of their lives, just as we all do.

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Mark Angelo Cummings. I am a 42 year old transsexual man. I was born in the wrong body, and I knew since the tender age of 3. According to the Merck Manual ( medical book) a child knows his or her gender identity as early as 18-24 month of age. You do not have to tell a child that they are a boy or a girl, they know this.

There is a biological sequence for this. All brains start out as female brains until the 8 weeks gestation. Where hormones interact with receptors that create the development of the fetus. If all goes well, typically gender which is programed in your brain will match with your sex ( gonads, reproductive organs and genitals) Gender and sex have two distinct meaning. Gender refers to your identity which is hardwired in the brain at 8 weeks time. Sex refers to the physical components which I mentioned.

As far as Barbara Walters wanting ratings, I don't doubt it, but besides whatever selfish reasons she might have had, I have to commend her. For she did us a justice. 1 out of 100 children are born with some form of gender and sex identity anomaly. Yet very few people know this, so kudos to Barbara for bringing the subject matter into prime time.

It is a tragic subject but one that has been kept under the rug for too long. We need to talk about it and realize it exists. We need to provide support to these families, there are many out there. We also need to embrace this subject and realize there are over 5 million transgender people in the world and the numbers are climbing. Our environment is polluted with endocrine disrupting chemicals, we will see an epidemic portion of transgender people in the years to come.

So I say educate, before you start putting someone or something down. I lived with this for 39 years, until I finally decided to take matters into my own hands and aligned my body with my mind.
