Priests rail against freedom.

from where did you dig this corpse? What is it about the UN and their need to discredit the one nation that is the Enforcer of what they want? We give them money, arms, manpower, aid supplies... Let them take care of their own in their own fashion. We should take care of our own in our own fashion. Just an off topic thought here, Does anyone think that maybe Obama promised Hillary a Supreme Court Justice spot the other night when they met alone at Diane's house?

Dear GunnyG
Pope Benedict has certainly inherited a lot of baggage, hasn't he? Unfortunately, the Papacy's power is largely ceremonial (like Queen Elizabeth's) and in such an extensive organization as the Catholic Church carries only so much weight. I only hope that he and the Cardinals can ultimately prevail against the political, Marxist, God-is-dead theocrats that have been infiltrating his church for decades (as they have others) before they succeed in destroying Christendom... which is, of course, their goal.
And now, one of the biggest priestly renegades of all is president of the General Assembly? That's even more obscene than Yasser Arafat's infamous address to the UN... or Hugo Chavez crossing himself while referring to President Bush as "El Diablo". The Devil's minions, indeed, now run the United Nations for all to see. If there was ever a time for us to, with all conceivable justice, sever ties with this perverted organization, this is it.
If Donald Trump turned the UN Building into a hotel- with the Assembly room as a Grand Casino floor- it would still serve a better purpose (and a more productive one!)- than what it does at present.

This says all that I need to know that if we do not get the heck out of the UN we are going to be a 3rd world country within a year of the annointed one being elected.
I wish our current President would call this turd out on that statement. Tell the US just what we have done to cause the UN to lose credibilty? Seems to me that they have enough scandals without us. Oil for food, raping underage girls and their mothers just for fun, and basically being thugs did not involve any US troops.

Certainly the UN merits much criticism, but consider that since we are a prominent member of that organization, then that criticism partially falls on us.
And when you mention oil for food, since we played large part in constructing both the sanctions and the oil for food program; then again, some of that criticism falls on us.
When you consider history and current events, there is more than enough criticism to go around--unless of course, we feel compelled to feel superior to others.

Our demands partially wrote the UN oil for food program. The program was designed to show favoritism to the Kurdish region and to have the rest of Iraq bear the brunt of the costs.
It is Hans Von Sponeck's words that tell us that Baghdad never delayed requisitioning supplies for its people. Von Sponeck, btw, was the program's second coordinator. The first one who resigned in protest of the program calling it genocidal was an American named Denis Haliday.
In addition, during one of the years there, Von Sponeck monitored airstrikes which took place at a rate of 1 airstrike every 3 days killing over 100 people and injuring hundreds.

Isn't that like saying if Bill Gates closed Microsoft, then many people would lose their jobs. So if Bill Gates is superior, so be it. If Walmart is superior, so be it. Let the superior be above the law.
Internationally, that mentality breed contempt and conflict. And conflict is something we want to avoid while technology makes even the weak powerful. Also, if you have a fundamental commitment to the rule of law, then this superior notion is not acceptable.

I agree with your point to a point. But should our position in financing the UN imply a privileged status? If so, where is equality and how will we get other nations to practice equality internally if we can't discipline ourselves to practice it in our foreign policies.
The Rule of Law requires equality between nations. Without it, you are merely playing king of the hill or relying on the rule of force

"The Untied Nations"
Some fifty plus years ago I was listening to a late night commentator on the radio. He was talking about a newspaper article about the United Nations but the paper had a typo and it came out "Untied Nations". He was asking if it was actually a "United" Nations or an "Untied" Nations. This was so many years ago. Back in the day of Dag Hammerskjold. So it seems there has been discontent with the UN almost since its inception. Why does the Great American Government keep feeding this grossly overweight pig at our trough of cornucopia?

I agree with you that the same could be said of our Government. The problem is that too many people will just vote down the party line and re-elect the same people back into office. I fully support term limits. We should not allow people to turn holding office into a career. I also feel that it should be easier for the voters to remove someone from office if they are not performing their duties. We the People have given too much power to the politicians both Republican and Democrat and now we are all suffering for it. We may not agree on many issues but I bet that you do not vote for someone based on the letter next to their name. I have never been registered with a party and I never will. I often vote for 3rd party candidates if I believe they will do some good. People should always vote for the candidate that best represents their beliefs but too many people vote based soley on what party the candidate belongs to.

I think the concept of voting for the ideal candidate you "believe in" is flawed because in any race, you only get an image of what the candidate is, not who they truly are. You are allowing yourselves to "believe" in a manufactured image.
My voting habits are much more cynical and pragmatic. I vote for the candidate with a realistic chance of winning that comes closest to your ideal (fantasy) candidate.

Term Limits
The reason the congressional term of the Representative is 2 years instead of the 6 of the Senator is because the original intent of the Representative was to be a Citizen who puts aside his business for two years and goes to to the capitol to keep an eye on the government. But the politicians have perverted its intent, like they do everything, and now professional political prostitutes make a career out of it. My state has term limits and the results are statesmen like Inholf and Coburn. My representative is approaching term limits and he will be missed but I am confident that with our system we will get another good man to represent us.

oil for food
The US knew what was going on before things went public. In fact, the oil for food program, largely devised by the US, was call "genocidal" by the first UN coordinator who managed it. That would be an American named Denis Haliday.
During one 6 month phase of the program, the average amount of money spent per Iraqi was around 32 cents a day. That was to cover food, medicine, and infrastructure. As for food, buying local food was not allowed. In addition, despite the fact that the Iraqi central gov't ordered goods right away, their delivery was delayed because out of the same money designated for the non-kurdish regions was first used to pay for goods for the kurdish region and for claims made by Kuwait for the Iraqi invasion.
The oil for food program was designed to offset the deadly effects of our bombing of Iraqi infrastructure (bombing civilian infrastructure violates international law) and the sanctions which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children. So regardless of the corruption that occurred in the oil for food program, there are other guilty parties as well including us.
