Reading Jefferson or Madison, et al demonstrates what you say. They were much more concerned with liberty than democracy.
In fact they feared democracy for the very same reasons we should today. Democracy is but another way to say mob rule. They chose a republican form of government with minority rights to forestall the dangers of democracy.

You are so right! I'm glad you brought up Hitler's pre-WWII Germany. The signs of that same cloaking of selfish aims in the appealing attire of democracy is also starkly evident in this country since Obama "came into power". Honduras has made it clear they believe they had the legal right to remove Zelaya and from his apparent motives, I agree. You can call it a coup, call it whatever you like. Because Latin America is ashamed of the large number of coups in their region over the last forty years, doesn't preclude the possibility of a country determining they prefer liberty and acting accordingly. I like to think of it as the bravery of liberty in the face of tyranny. Americans(and their legislators) need to find a little of that bravery to win back their country!
