I heard something in passing on the radio this morning but didn't get the whole story...something about the whole thing being a lie, but they still want it explained why so many young girls are pregnant. Wish I had heard more detail on that one.
I bet Gloucester is crowded with paying news people!

Acc to the Globe only the principal has said the girls made a pact, but the number of pregnant girls is 4 times the usual number for the year. No one else is talking except someone wants to give out condoms without parents' permission.
It will be interesting to see if there is any follow-up in this story.
Something is going on, that's for sure.

Common sense tells you it is either in the genre of Gang Activity or Fertility Cult, either way the Girls, the School and the Community are in deep sheite and have, as Dezzy Arnez would say: "Some 'splainin to do."

a similar action by black high school girls. By their senior year, some have as many as 4 children usually with different partners. Less than 25% of the black graduating girls have NO children.

According to their teachers, these black girls are proving to the world that they are "experienced" and capable of bearing children. It almost becomes a "sorority" among these black women as they get older.

I have not noticed this phenomenon in the white high school girl groups to any great degree. However, according to my niece in Franklin, TN, the Hispanic high school girls are starting down this path of pregancies before High School graduation. Her school has a day care center for these children!

Perhaps in the black community this has something to do with welfare and SSI payments. I don't know.

Yup, in the late 70's I taught in a majority black school of VA's Eastern Shore (the part that's connected to MD and DEL and NOT to the rest of VA) and one of my students had fathered 3 bastids before he graduated!

What was pathetic was a conversation with a Black CO-WORKER--College Grad Educator, Teacher, who simply put that down as a natural behavior of a Black Male and to be expected if not enabled! NO SHEITE!! GOSPEL! ACTUALITY! REAL people being accurately quoted!

The latest, of course was this AM on the Talk Shows "No pact says pregnant teen."

I can't speak for Gray, but it DID seem in the majority Black Jr. High I taught in on Va's Eastern Shore in the late 70's that FATHERING children out of Wedlock was some kind of status symbol. I had one kid in 9th Grade that had 3 before he graduated. He carried a lot of street cred in the halls based on how the other kids reacted to him.

And then there was my conversation with a Black Female Colleague about a Black Male Colleague who had a wife and kids in NJ, but was teaching down here and nailing everything in sight! When she told me he had a family I was shocked, but MORE shocked when she said "that's the way it is" with an air of resigned acceptance that had NOT trace of anger or resentment or even DISAPROVAL in it--freaked me out.

But only you can speak to your experience in St. Lu, and I commend, honor, and respect you for your service there.
